Guest guest
Hello all, I found this to be of interest, particularly to anyone who c/o bloating. In an article in WebMD Medical News by DeNoon and reviewed by Charlotte Grayson, MD, it says........ " To be digested, fructose must be broken down before it gets to the colon (large intestine). When this doesn't happen, it becomes high-octane fuel for bacteria that normally live peacefully in the gut. The result of this feeding frenzy is hydrogen gas -- and symptoms of bloating, rumbling, pain, and loose stools. ..... More than half ... also experienced significant gas and bloating after they ingested the fructose. .. In addition to fruits,... processed foods made with corn syrup are high in fructose. Most soft drinks are now made with varieties of corn syrup instead of cane sugar, as are many types of chewing gum. " Surprisingly it went on to say, " And it may be that by making dietary modifications people can resolve these symptoms. This is a relatively new idea,... I allow myself about 4 ounces of juice three or four times a week, thinking it was good for me. I did not realize the connection between the juice and the subsequent problems I developed. This also addresses some of the issues we were talking about at the symposium about the need to eliminate soft drinks and other carbonated drinks from our diet. And, gum! But, interesting. It is such an important discovery that it will be presented at the upcoming annual GI Symposium. I'll be sure and look out for the scientific report so we can have a reference for the future. Until then, I think I might either avoid soft drinks & gum or matches! Karyn , RN Founder / Executive Director http://www.pancassociation.org 1- / KarynWms@...
