Guest guest
That is a really good questions that my husband and I have been talking about too. My 2 1/2 year old wcf was just at his routine appointment when our primary dr. asked about starting a new procedure that they have been getting really great results with. They are going to start on one dose every other day of Zitro to try as preventive along with the low daily dose of erythrom. I quess we will update fter we see if there are any good results. has had a tough two years. The first year of his life he spent 14 weeks in the hospital. It seemed as if we would no more that get him home and maybe if we were lucky we would have one healthy week before he would start up agian. We have had bad cultures with psenominia frequently. Then we switch primary pulumanologist. He has tried everything to keep out of the hospital (even when my husband and I think he probably needed to go in). He explained that what even he could do including this to keep him home would be better for him because when he goes from a " germ free " hopital enviroment to home he can't fight the bacteria off. We'll see. He has kept us out for alomost exactly one year right now and I am hoping this will help keep us home. Kathy Stepmom to Joe 13 wocf, 11 wocf and Mom to 2 and 1/2 wcf. Guest guest
Kim or anyone, Can you tell me if Zithryomax (sp?) is to be taken preventatively, or only during an exacerbation? Liam 8 wocf & Eilish 5 wcf
Guest guest
, I know you live in Australia, so getting Zithromax prescribed for Elish may be more of a struggle than in the US. I know another mom living in Australia. She recently had a tough time getting her son's doctor to prescribe Zithromax. Her sun had developed a cough and she wanted to try the Zithromax for inflammation and she took all the studies to the doctor. The doctor finally agreed to try it only IF the pharmacist would agree. The pharmacist finally agreed but would not prescribe it permanently using the protocol of Mon., Wed., Fri. They only gave her enough liquid Zithromax for one week. (If I recall correctly, she said the pharmacist was involved in the decision because he's involved in current Australian studies of Zithromax). They want to be sure this is safe for young children and she said Australia likes to do their own studies, not rely just on studies from other countries. Her son's culture isn't growing pseudomonas; only staph shows up. But as we know, this doesn't mean that pseudomonas isn't present -- it may just not be present in whatever sample was coughed up or swabbed from the throat at the time. So to answer your question, " Can Zithromax be taken preventively or only during an exacerbation " is a tough question. Since Zithromax is a nice anti-inflammatory, thins mucus, decreases levels of TNF alpha (TNF alpha stands for Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha, which is involved in interluken production and certain interlukens cause inflammation), etc. etc. you think Aithromax would be a good all-round med for ALL pwcf to take IF they have any type of lung involvement. But some people think perhaps Zithromax shouldn't be started until you get a positive pseudomonas culture. I'm probably not much help because I am sitting in the middle of the fence on this issue. Here's what I think: IF lungs are inflammed and actively producing mucus and a productive cough -- EVEN IF there is no pseudomonas cultured -- I believe Zithromax should be used for a short burst of time until the inflammation is under control again. But IF you get a positive culture of pseudomonas, I believe Zithromax should be started immediately regardless if you have symptoms or not.
