Guest guest
Hi , Several years ago I participated in a conference on farm labor in the Imperial Valley. As a field trip we traveled with the INS on their patrols, watched infrared video of a botched attempt to cross the American Canal in an inflatable boat, and watched new detainees being processed in their Calexico processing center. But more to the point, we also went to downtown Calexico for the 4am 'shape up' where legally permitted workers travel across the border and join work crews for bus rides to the fields. They all travel through turnstiles and I am sure the INS has a daily count. Just what fraction do not get the farm work option for a given day (I was told that some come just for the socialization in the streets and shops but others go home disappointed) and which are going to work in non-ag work is unclear. But there are likely sources. On the other hand if the INS does not release that info I have just wasted your time. We were allowed to stand and watch so a head count estimate is a conceivable if not tedious possibility. I was curious if there were any updates past 2000 of farmworker demographics in this county, and I was also curious if anyone knew of specific numbers on those who cross the border everyday versus those that live in Imperial County. Any ideas??? THANK YOU Kun Doctoral Candidate of Population and International Health Harvard School of Public Health 921 10th Street #219 Santa , CA 90403 310 779 2223 hkun@...
