As a wife of a previous farmworker it strikes me unbelievable that a family would not be able to pay 1.00 for a tube of tooth paste in order to prevent tooth decay.I too sympathize with farmworkers .There is alot of unjustice in those fields believe when I say we know we suffer everyday from these work related injuries and we have not been in an orchard now for 10 yrs.and our teeth are bad but it was not due to not having tooth paste it was from the harsh chemical.so what is 1.00 to invest for dental hygiene.Because let me tell you there is alot worse and everyone can afford a dollar. I think that it is great that you take your interest in farmworkers.R.

Our nutritionist here has said that formerly, baking soda and water made a good

paste with which to clean teeth. By the way, for general info., toothpaste

usually costs well over a dollar. It is not cheap anymore.

Can anyone provide any insight regarding alternatives to toothpaste? I

am currently working on an oral health education project and need some

advise regarding alternatives to toothpaste. Because toothpaste can be

expensive for some migrant farmworker families to purchase, I want to be

able to give families some sound alternatives to toothpaste that will

help in preventing cavities. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate your concern regarding farmworker families and sympathize

with your experiences in field. Your are correct, there are many

injustices in the fields. I see it everyday in my work. However, I

think one dollar is quite a bit when it means having to decide between

an inexpensive loaf of bread or toothpaste. If I were faced with the

same decision as many of my families are everyday, I would choose a loaf

of bread over toothpaste any day. Its really not about just one dollar,

my families often live in remote areas. In fact, the majority of my

families live on an average 15 miles from the closest business district.

So, what that they are faced with is considering gas costs, their car

breaking down, the cost of the toothpaste, and possible even being cited

by the local Sheriff's office for a disrepaired car (cracked windshield,

turnsignal not working) just to buy a tube of toothpaste. When

farmworker families consider all these things, and they nearly often do,

it quite easy not to buy toothpaste. What I want to do is give my

families some choices if they can't buy toothpaste. I know there are

other alternatives out there and I have received some advice from some

great people in this group. Again thank you for your concern about this

issue and I hope all of us can find ways to lessen the suffering of

migrant farmworker families.

Respectfully,
