Guest guest
In the August 7, 2003 edition of the NY Times, Dr. Henry I. , a doctor, who is a fellow at the Hoover Institution, wrote an op-ed column urging the resurrection of the use of DDT. DDT was properly banned in the US in the 70s. It is also one the Dirty Dozen chemicals that was the subject of a world wide ban of 12 Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS). DDT was part of the POPS treaty, because it causes cancer to humans, kills birds and wildlife and persists for very long periods of time. In our global village, high levels of DDT have been found in the artic (in indigenous peoples and wildlife) even though it was not used anywhere near that location. The call for the reinstitution of DDT is also based on a scare tactic summary of west nile virus. While West NIle is a problem, it causes less morbidity and mortality than the flu. We need to solve problems of newly arriving viruses but not by poisoning ourselves and our planet. Farmworker Justice Fund
