Guest guest
raises a very critical issue both in terms of teen pregnancy, domestic violence and sexual abuse and the impact these social matters are adversely impacting migrant and immigrant families, teens and young adults. I offer two suggestions. First, a very progressive grassroots program that started in California targeting young men and males in general. Tello is the last name of the founder and director of this initiative called Jovenes de Valor. This is either the name of initiative or one of the programs. We hosted a training sponsored by our county office of child and family services a couple of years ago. Secondly, we have an organization in Portland, Oregon called DIF – Desarrollo Integral de la Familia. Its focus is domestic violence. They are hosting a conference this Friday, the fourth or sixth such international conference where speakers from Mexico and other Central and South American countries come to share their expertise. The goal is to sustain support systems consistent with the county of origin for our immigrant community. I have worked with DIF providing training for their promotoras and I do an annual health and wellness workshop for their families. Feel free to contact me outside of this listserv if you have specific questions or want to follow up with these resources. Tello’s group has a web page. Local Latino parents have raised a concern in our community about older men picking up their teenage daughters at local bars, clubs, and other places. Our local Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Coalition is trying to help address our parents' concerns about issues like personal safety, domestic violence, dropping out of high school, and teenage pregnancy. Are there any programs out there that address these concerns -- for either men, teenage women, or local health departments? I would also like to hear any comments on cultural or other issues surrounding this topic. Also, our Latino community is overwhelmingly of Mexican origin, ranging from recent immigrants to established communities of a century or more. Thank you for your input.
