Hi everyone,

My question is for the post-op people, my sister Kim is now 4 weeks

post-op today and she is not very happy, she's lost 23 lbs. and that she is

happy about, but she says that she has this horrible taste in her mouth she

can't seem to get rid of, bad breath and feels very tired, run down and no

energy, she wanted me to ask all of you if any of you had experienced this

and if so what you may have done to help remedy it? I appreciate any advice

or pointers you can offer. Thanks a lot!!!

Seems like I had a taste in my mouth too. I think your body goes through a

detoxification after surgery and as you start to lose weight, you get rid of

toxins that cause bad breath and an icky taste for a while. I don't have it

now and haven't had it in a while. I am 5 mo post op and have had some

periods of tiredness too. My energy level changes and sometimes I have

energy to spare and other times I'm pooped out. However if she continues to

have trouble, check with Dr R and he'll figure out what to do. Is she

getting enough juice? I know you have to keep your potassium level up high

or you will be tired. in Missouri

The horrible taste in the mouth is from ketones (ketoacidosis) when

you're losing weight and/or from being dehydrated.

The lack of energy is from either not enough potassium or not enough

protein.

Tell her to try drinking Spicy V-8 (which has a lot of potassium) or

take potassium pills (you can get them in the vitamin section) and

also to try to increase her protein, either through food or

supplements. Shrimp is high protein and seems to stay down well for

me.

Kind regards,
