Hi everyone,

My question is for the post-op people, my sister Kim is now 4 weeks

post-op today and she is not very happy, she's lost 23 lbs. and that she is

happy about, but she says that she has this horrible taste in her mouth she

can't seem to get rid of, bad breath and feels very tired, run down and no

energy, she wanted me to ask all of you if any of you had experienced this

and if so what you may have done to help remedy it? I appreciate any advice

or pointers you can offer. Thanks a lot!!!

Thanks Liz, I'll pass it on to her, your description sounds just like the

things she was saying to me, even the part about if its going to stay this

way she wishes she had not done it. I'll keep encouraging her and tell her it

will get better, again thanks!!!!

<< Tell her to try drinking Spicy V-8 (which has a lot of potassium) or

take potassium pills (you can get them in the vitamin section) and

also to try to increase her protein, either through food or

supplements. Shrimp is high protein and seems to stay down well for

me.

Kind regards,

Thanks for your help , I will pass all this on to her as she is starting

to allow how she feels physically affect her emotionally, which i'm sure is

normal, I just hate to see her so unhappy!

Cathy,

I get the bad taste in my mouth and breath from GERD(GAstroesohpageal

reflux disorder) I notice it is best controlled when I take my

Prevacid at night instead of in the morning. Seems to cut down on the

reflux.

I am preop and have an esophageal ulcer and anemia. I sure can relate

to the exteme fatigue. DId she have the MGB?

I have noticed other non mgb patients do not take the supplements and

follow the same post op plan.

IF she is NOT spilling ketones in her urine(as someone suggested

checking and I think that is a must do thing) then she should explore

the fatigue thing further.

Eating small meals 5 times a day with protein and potassium should

help if its nutritional.Along with a rigid schedule in taking

vitamins and supplements and of course the meds. Is she following the

famous schedule that some have been kind enough to post?

Also is she getting some form of exercise.....a walk around the

house...get out in the sunshine in the less hot and humid hours

should help too.

I am wondering if she is hypothyroid?? I know I am and this also

contributes to fatigue. If not has she had a complete blood count

(CBC) and electrolytes(chemistry) done recently. She could probably

benifit from having this evaluated...just to be on the safe side.

Also regarding the physical aspect affecting her mood she may need to

talk to a counselor if there are no abnormal labs etc and this

continues. Depression is common after WLS. It is also common after

any big event....u know the " big let down " especially if she is not

getting the results she expected and feels like H***.

You did not say how much she weighed. I certainly think that 24

pounds in someone who even barely qualifed for the surgery ,ie 80-100

pounds overweight is a GREAT response to the WLS. WOW. That is 6

pounds a week. I think she is losing to fast. Just my opinion...Ok

everyone now u can flame me(hiding under the desk) .

NOt everyone can expect rapidly losing huge amounts of weight.

She should try a food diary and she if she increasing the amount of

what she is eating........if that helps.....ie more frequent amounts

of smaller portions.

Just some ideas.

Most of all she needs to be in contact with her PCP and go see them

ASAP.......that is what they are there for. A visit to a PCP and some

lab work is alot cheaper than a trip to the emergency room.
