Guest guest
Hi again :-) I have a few questions about an attack. Right now I am having pain in the pancreas area and am still in the process of an evaluation for this. I am scheduled Monday for a test. In the meantime, I am concerned that I not do anything to make the pancreas worse and hopefully help it to weather the storm. The problem is that Eating causes mild discomfort and there is swelling on that side...I can't move around too comfortably. But if I try to go without eating I get the blood sugar problems. Waking up every two hours...at first with a headache, but I have been eating every 2-3 hrs in small amts so that makes the blood sugar probs better, but seems to stir up the left side pain. The pain seems to be most noticable within a few minutes of eating and then it calms down and then it comes back when I have gone too long with out food...maybe 2 hours. Is this usual? The only thing I am eating is tomato soup that is diluted with tomato juice and has no dairy in it, and I mix maybe 2-3T of non fat yogurt. I am afraid to try anything else in case it causes more probs. I am eating nothing but that day and night for 2 days..and still have to wait at least til Monday and probably longer. Anyone have any information about is there anything I can do to protect it from getting worse? Should I be careful moving? What about taking supplements? I read Vit E and C are important but nervous about starting up the pain. Seeing that vit E caps are usually in oil, aren't they? I thought the fat from them might stir things up. Anyone have experience with taking vit E while having an attack Any and all input is very much appreciated. Thanks, Jane

Then stop eating! The first aid treatment in hosp for pancreatitis is nothing in the mouth. The panc is activated everytime anything goes in the mouth. You still need 3 litres of fluid a day, so keep that up, but make it water or soups. Avoid coffee or tea. Avoid all sugary drinks, the panc needs to make insulin to deal with those. Avoid FAT as much as possible. Avoid any hot spice stuff, many have found that attacks the pancreas as well. >I can't move around too comfortably. Then don't move around round much. Rest, or sit at the computer, or whayever you can do. I have problems with walking, standing and everything except sitting in my favourite chair and sleeping. >But if > I try to go without eating I get the blood sugar problems. Waking up > every two hours...at first with a headache, but I have been eating > every 2-3 hrs in small amts so that makes the blood sugar probs > better, but seems to stir up the left side pain. Well the panc organises the blood sugars and " brittle diabetes " is a serious side effect of pancreatitis. Stabilising the blood sugars is a problem in the treatment, and guess what?? I know about diabetes as well. I never have blood sugar in single figures, unless I am in hospital and not eating at all! > > The pain seems to be most noticable within a few minutes of eating > and then it calms down and then it comes back when I have gone too > long with out food...maybe 2 hours. I have had tomatoes and apples both aggravate the pancreas! Sorry, but just another thing to watch! What might be easing the pain a little is the WARMTH of the soup. Heat will help panc pain and maybe a hot water bottle or wheat or rice bag heated and applied to the left abdomen will assist you with the pain problems! Of course medication is the other way to go and if it gets bad enuff, don't hesitate, it is off to the ER straight away! > I am afraid to try anything else in case it causes more probs. The vitamins generally should be fine. If they are delivered in fat it should be reasonably benign in nature, the same with the oil. Alcohol is the real enemy and cough mixtures are some of the most dangerous ones to watch! A pharmacist is a good one to consult about such products, also a dietician is good as well. I have the Dabetes Dietcians to be ome of the best and most informed. If you are a member of their society then go there, if not, go there and seek help, if they are real good, you might join! HAHAHHA My email is above if you want to direct contact me but I am going into hospital in 9 hours anyway for a nerve block for pain so it could be a coupla days b4 I get home again! Keep up the faith Jane and feel free to experiment a little with the food. Remember the plainer and more mild it is in nature then the better it is for us, most likely. I wrote a paper on Triggers you might find interesting at: http://www.angelfire.com/md3/pancreatitis/issuesdocs/triggers.html Have a nice day! Marmite!
