Half of all new HIV infections in the United States occur in young people under the age of 25. Moreover, youth of color, especially young women, are disproportionately affected by HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Over the past few years, Advocates for Youth has partnered with the NAACP <http://www.naacp.org/> ; National Council of La Raza <http://www.nclr.org/> ; National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education <http://www.nafeo.org/> ; and National Organization of Concerned Black Men <http://www.cbmnational.org/> to mobilize community involvement in the fight against HIV/AIDS on behalf of young African-Americans, Latinos, Asian Pacific Islanders and Native Americans. Advocates for Youth is dedicated to the creation of programs and policies that help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health by providing information, training, and strategic assistance to youth-serving organizations, policy makers, youth activists, and the media in the United States and the developing world. Through the Advocates Youth of Color Initiative, your staff may receive strategic technical assistance via email, telephone, mail and face-to-face meetings. The initiative also provides tailored trainings and workshops to young people, youth serving professionals and youth peer educators. Seed grants are also available to help implement HIV prevention programs and services. Tailored technical assistance and training is offered on the following topics: · Addressing adolescent sexual and reproductive health · Comprehensive sex education, cultural competence · Critical components of HIV/STI and teen pregnancy prevention programming (including life skills) · Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth sexual health issues · Parent-child communication about sexuality issues · Peer education · Youth development as a prevention strategy · Youth-adult partnerships The Advocates Youth of Color Initiative welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with your organization to broaden and increase the positive impact we can achieve in the lives of young people. Working together, we can strengthen our efforts to prevent HIV infection among youth of color.
