Hi,

Well here is the report on my presentation at the American Society for

Bariatric Surgery meeting.

In general it went pretty much as expected. Many of the surgeons said a

variety of very harsh things.

Their criticisms can be summarized as:

1) This MGB must be the same as the old loop gastric bypass done years ago.

Answer: It is not.

The old loop put the bowel up close to the esophagus and mine does not. It

puts far away from the esophagus at the end of the stomach tube.

2) Since #1 is true in their minds (It is not true) then my good results

cannot be true (They are true)

3) If my results are not true and I claim they are true then I must be lying

(I am not)

In watching some of the other presentations I found our death rate is lower

than others. My rate of clots in the legs (DVT), clot in the lungs (PE) and

hernias are lower than anyone else (0, 0 and 0 respectively). Our rate of

post op ulcers is 3% (17 people) and it is lower than the other RNY surgeons

and we have no one with esophagitis and both of these things really bugged

them because they were common problems with the old loop bypass (but the MGB

is not the old loop gastric bypass).

They really do not like the fact that I have a web page and several

sarcastic comments were made about my use of the Internet.

As I recall not one person said anything complimentary.

There were a few of my Preop patients in the audience and they thought

things went well (?). One is a surgeon who said he went through the very

same thing 10-15 years ago when he presented a new approach in his area of

surgery.

I showed a slide of 's Preop contacts with 95 of MGB patients

and the weight loss that they told her about. Nothing seemed to budge them

from their prejudices.

I had a great time and encouraged anyone who was skeptical to contact my

patients directly to determine if my results (complications, operating

times, hospital stays etc.) are real or not.

In general I feel fine. The patients got to me quickly and were very

supportive so I did not have any time to be down about things.

The surgeon said I was a little arrogant, telling the group to look at my

results and to confirm them for themselves if they were skeptical. He

thought is was just right given how they were speaking to me. I can be a

little abrupt at times. I was very sure of myself because our results are

so much better than anyone else.

Speaking if that here is a nice note from a patient who had her Lap RNY by

another surgeon. She is doing great.

>>>>RE: How long were you in the hospital and how long was your surgery and

when did you go back to work???

Surgery time was **8 hours**, **7 ports** (1 inside the belly button) due to

adhesions probably due to C-Section, and small walnut hernia at the top of

my

vertical C-Section.

Total **hospital stay four days.** Three days in the hospital was

recommended

but I was 2 1/2 hours drive from home to hospital so Dr. S. (and I

concurred) to add one more day. I felt that I took longer to recover than I

had expected, maybe due to the length of the surgery? I believe I was pt#

35

for Dr. S's Lap RNY.

They put me in a pseudo ICU (extra nursing care for the first night). A few

hours after surgery I made sure I sat in a chair outside of the bed (with

lots of help from the staff). The staff was very impressed that I was

motivated enough to get out of bed within six hours. I took three weeks

from

work, maybe could have returned in two -- but I have an 18 month old and a

husband who just had othro surgery on his knee and I was exhausted from all

of the externals going on in my life.

Well that's the update.

Peace.
