Guest guest
While not specifically health-related, the video tapes described in the attachment could provide context for staff training, relations with other programs and working with the public. Many people liked the video tapes produced for the traveling museum exhibit, Coming Up On the Season: Migrant Farmworkers in the Northeast. Personally, I think they are the best thing in the exhibit. Both growers and farmworkers do a superb job. Now they are available on one combined video for purchase as an educational tool in a number of situations. Please see the attached description and ordering information. If you can also announce its availability in other list serves or publications, it would be much appreciated. I can answer any questions you might have via return e-mail. Many thanks. Herb Engman Director, Cornell Migrant Program <hje1@...> Farmworkers Video Now Available The exhibition, Coming Up on the Season: Migrant Farmworkers in the Northeast (sponsored by the Cornell Migrant Program) has drawn wide attention as it tours the Northeast. Now, the compelling videos that accompany the exhibition are available for purchase. The video represents an important compilation of the voices of today's working people as they sit in homes, fields and workplaces to discuss their work and our perception of it. For the project, almost fifty interviews were conducted in English and Spanish with both workers (from Mexico, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Canada) and growers in New York, New Jersey and Maine. Compiled on a single one-hour video cassette, the segments are: Apple Harvesting Shows the process of apple-picking as explained by both a worker and grower. 4:30 minutes Workers' Stories Farmworkers tell their personal narratives of work, traveling to find work and their hopes and aspirations for families at home and here in the United States. 21:00 minutes Where Does Your Food Come From? Workers and growers discuss American attitudes towards farm work and why much of the work is now done by immigrants. 9:00 minutes Who Makes Money in Agriculture? The pay of both workers and growers is often shaped by forces beyond their control. They discuss the economics of work, marketing and food distribution. 12:00 minutes What Do We Think About Farmworkers? Workers and growers discuss their views of the public perceptions of farm work and show a keen understanding of how many Americans perceive them. 11:00 minutes This video can be used in many ways: to develop community understanding; to find common ground between workers, growers and consumers; to encourage an appreciation of our diverse American society; to learn either English or Spanish. All videos are subtitled (in English when Spanish is spoken; in Spanish when English is spoken). The video is suitable for all ages and will be an important addition to schools, libraries and archives, museums, community action groups, labor organizations, migrant service agencies and other organizations interested in developing an understanding of the nature of today's farm work, explained directly by workers and growers. How to Purchase The cost of the video is $48 plus $5 shipping and handling. New York State purchasers must include 7% sales tax or a sales tax exemption form. Please send a check or purchase order to Galene Studios, PO Box 232, Treadwell, NY 13846. For more information, please contact Drew Harty, drew.harty@..., 607-829-3305.
