It is almost impossible to even counsel someone about the basics of nutrition, besides explaining the food pyramid, and what fats, proteins, and carbohydrates are. Even the food pyramid now comes in different varieties, a vegetarian, diabetic, cardiac, soy, and probably more. Diabetics are taught three types of diets, a consistent carbohydrate meal plan, an exchange meal plan, and a carbohydrate counting meal plan. I really believe strongly in your comment re: " full enjoyment of eating " . It may not be possible to have full enjoyment, but, by golly, there has to be some sense of satisfaction, with your food intake. Our food, nourishes not only our body, but also our soul. If we have to be so strict with our diet that it causes us to be uptight, angry, depressed, that can in itself cause more detriment than allowing one's self that food item that can again, provide an individual with enjoyment when they are eating. Eating and sharing food is such social and cultural event, that we have to do what we can to facilitate and incorporate ourselves into that part of our living. It is also a big part of our spiritual life, i.e., the breaking of bread. I am so glad that you are able to have such spicy foods without any complaints. I used to really love spicy foods and now, interestingly, I have no desire for anything 'picante' at all. (Thank goodness). I think our bodies know what it can handle, and speaks to us through cravings or lack of. I can't tolerate spicy foods, and my desire and cravings have been lifted from me.
