I had forgotten that you were schooling Jackie at home. That is wonderful

that you are able to do that. It is almost the only option for children with

serious chronic illness which makes regular and consistent attendance

impossible.

Do you use any formal books of home schooling or do you just have a list of

learning requirements Jackie is required to know? I ask this because I am

curious what is taught re; medicine, healthcare, chronic illness, etc. I am

always looking for a way to make changes to accurately portray this disease.

I have been working on a " Pancreatitis In The Schools, " a program to teach

students and the teachers about the disease of Pancreatitis. It is formatted

similar to the other programs taken to the schools through such agencies as

the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, American Lung

Association, etc. I thought of this as I was preparing pre-post tests for the

symposium to be used when applying for CEU hours.

Home schooling may be a good place to do a trial run before taking the

program to the public school board or private schools. The components I put

into the program are to:

a) teach re: human body / systems: focus on the

teach risk factors: focus on adopting healthy lifestyle choices early.

c) teach s/s &the dz. process: focus on the important role of pancreas.

d) teach re: " silent diseases " : focus on listening to your body.

e) teach re: chronic pain & alternative pain management.

f) teach love, tolerance, and acceptance of those with disabilities.

, did Jackie seem to need more support, understanding, and acceptance

from her peers or her teachers when she was in public school?

Cecelia, does your school utilize any of the healthcare awareness programs

put out by the various organizations? Does your school nurse do most of the

health & lifestyle teaching?
