While I am not an herbal practicioner, I have been studying seriously these last 6 years, and plan, when my children are bit older, to possibly attend the naturopathic college near me, or some similar program. Once I found out that many medicenes are made from herbs, and only through manipulation and synthetic manufacturing can a patent and profits be possible, I was intrigued. I have had some very severe health problems, from cancer to stroke, to a blood clot sitting in a vein by the brain for 8 months. I was dying. I was also allergic to coumadin and reacted badly to heparin injections. Little did I know that coumadin was always made from red clover until the point the drug makers could synthesize the coumarins in a lab, synthetically, and slap a patent on it. When I switch over to natural blood thinners, by MRI and MRV my blood clot disappeared in 2 weeks, with no side effects. After that, I was hooked. Aspirin used to made out of white willow, until synthetically reproduced look alike was made. I use white willow. I have been cancer free for 7 years, and my heart murmur and cardiovascular problems disappeared. I still use maintenance herbs. In fact, couple months ago, National Geographic reported on some studies conducted on some of the herbs I am taking, that they kill cancer cells, kaposi's carcinoma, herpes and SARS. Very neat stuff. Having MCS, I am allergic to most medicenes anyway, and find the natural buffering chemicals in many herbs (ie nutrients compatable with the phytochemical) to be much better tolerated. Some medicenes can send me into anaphylaxis! That said, not every herb is for everyone, and it is important for people to seek information from someone knowledgable, because many herbs work best in a mixture, and some herbs work against each other. Some herbs are contraindicated if using certain prescription medicenes as well. I make many of my own tinctures, just like people can make tinctures of vanilla extract and whatnot. All a tincture is is an alcohol extraction of a plant property(ies). The FDA in the US will pull a herb or put out a warning if 1 person has a side effect, even if the wrong herb was reported. There is an instance where a lady died after taking a tea of foxglove in her garden, what digitalis is made from, and that is dangerous. The lady supposedly mistook the foxglove for something else. The FDA because of that one case scenario was willing to put out one of those frightening " beware of all herbs " statements in the media, but are willing to let countless thousands die or be mamed by Vioxx before withdrawing it. Unfortunately, this day and age, it is not just Canada trying to control alternative medicene. Right now, compounding pharmicies in a couple of states are the subject of a couple bills that are trying to do away with them. Hopefully, it will blow over. I just don't get it, I am beginning to think it has nothing to do with the public's welfare. Nothing. What about the people who depend on them for medicenes because of allergies??? Anyways, I think it is prudent to be careful with any and all medicenes, herbs and supplements. Especially with people like us with MCS. Summer --------------------------------- Yahoo!
