Last Friday I was Diagnosed with Pancreatitis. I do not know my Amylase was but

my Lipase was 2,113. I was placed on a clear fluid diet and 4 days later it was

down to 733. Is this expected? is this abnormal? I have no idea what this means

and what the levels are etc... I do not feel like I am getting a straight

forward answer from my Doctor or anyone. I just want to know what am I in for.

We still have no reason for this and I have been in for an ultraSound and a CT

scan with no results yet. Still waiting for the final CT report.

Being Pancreatic, will I gain or lose weight? It would not hurt me to lose

weight. I wouldn't want to gain anymore thou.

Thank you

Tyson Mathews

P.S.

I have no understanding of what I have am have no idea what to expect, Should I

be scared? I have a wife and 2 kids to worry about. I can't have them worring

about me. everything I read on the net states " morality rate " and risky etc....

what can I expect. I am only 30 years old.

Any support would be very greatful. I am just pulling for answers right now and

trying to find a reason for this.

Amylase and Lipase are the pancreatic enzymes released to digest our

food. When things go haywire and the pancreas begins to digest

itself we end up with pancreatitis. You do NOT have to have an

elevation in these levels to be in the middle of an attack. My

levels were dead center normal while in the ER and doubled overnight

and were still just barely over the high end of normal. They are not

good markers for me, and from what I have been reading, they aren't

that great period.

Go to our website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pancreatitis and

read the archives...there are many articles archived that have a ton

of good information.

The three primary causes of pancreatitis I am aware of are alcohol,

gallbladder disease and very high triglyceride level. There are

other causes, but these are the three I am most familiar with.

If you do not feel you are getting any answers, then you must be

proactive and talk with your doctors in a straightforward way...talk

firmly but pleasantly, tell them your concerns, ask them if they are

justified, ask them what you are to expect. It could be you aren't

getting straight answers just yet because they don't have all the

information gathered just yet...

You will have to change your diet, either some or a lot, depending on

how " wrong " it is now....you should get clear diet instructions from

your doc or a dietician. Low fat, high fiber, moderate carbohydrate

intake, probably no alcohol will be some of the primary things

discussed. And since your wife is most likely the primary cook, it

would be wise for her to attend the appointments with the dietician

when you go so she can ask the questions she needs to know in order

to fix you a healthy meal. The diet that is best for you is best for

everybody actually, and one we should all be eating...but we in

America love our junk food and snacks !

Hoping this is a good start...
