We are on Day 4 of SCD and my son won't eat. He has severe

texture/taste issues. It is sad, b/c I know he is hungry. He took the

container of cut up pancake yesterday, dumped it out on his highchair,

came and got me to lift him in, then cried and fussed in it for an

hour. I finally had to feed him some pearsauce with ground chicken in

it to get some calories in him (which he totally gagged through, got

about 3 TBS in him). He had huge die off, his belly is completely flat

now, but he is refusing all foods..and we tried a lot in the past 4

days, including making it look exactly like the other foods he eats on

gfcf. He is so lethargic, I don't even think I can send him to school

today.

How long can he go? Any experience..

Hi Tracey,

I totally understand where you are - Cody is 3yo and has such severe

SID that he gags & vomits anything new - regardless of flavor or

texture - it's a huge fight to get anything into him that he doesn't

already know. But for us that's the key - he has to get to know it

first - so I fight him on it. I hold him and push tiny bits of food

in and say " just a taste " - he spits it out and this goes on for

several feedings until he will allow a little bit more to be put in

and then eventually he'll let me feed him the food (provided it has

enough sweetness to it). He used to only eat oatmeal - so I've even

tried to make the new foods seem like oatmeal - he knows the

difference!

Yesterday was day 1 legal and boy did he fuss and fight me on

everything I fed him. Then this morning before school I fed him a

little of it again expecting the fight - but he after an initial gag

reflex, he didn't vomit or spit it all out. He's getting " used " to

the foods/textures and I pray will continue to allow me to feed them

to him for the next several days until he's healed more.

I would say as long as he's not allergic to it - press on - I know

it can seem like a battle but start with just getting little bits of

the same things into him until he's more used to that particular

food/texture. I hate pushing food into Cody's mouth - I worry that

I'll cause him some huge food issues as he grows up, but I also know

that without good food he doesn't stand a chance. He's also the

kind of kid whose sensory issues cause him not to want to try new

things - so there will always be some level of battle with him. And

I know that a little bit of the good stuff is better then alot of

the bad stuff he was eating.

Sorry you are going through this - I laughed with my DH last night

about it - why can't we have one of those " my kid will eat anything "

kids - but I love our Cody and wouldn't trade him for the world -

sensory picky eating and all!

Peace,

Bobbie
