Guest guest
Hi, sorry to hear about all the pain med pandemonium. Let me tell you that it is ok to 'step on toes' if shes not getting any pain relief. I have taken a mishmosh of pain meds myself and everyone has their favorite. With a bad attack I get 125 mg of demerol every 2 to 3 hours until the pain gets under control and then they back it off to 100 every 3 or 75 every 2 to 3 depending on the on-call physician. I have had all the others and found out some interesting details about certain pain meds. Let me tell you first that most of the pain meds except demerol are what they call clean drugs which means they go in and are used up very quickly by the body with very little lasting effect. I was told by many doctors that morphine is a no no for pancreas patients because it can cause the sphincter of oddi to spasm and create more pain or prolong an attack. Demerol if taken on a regular basis stores in the central nervous system and they have to be careful about the dosage so that it doesnt become toxic. oxycontin and phentanyl can make you lose time and feel like your out of control. I have also had the same reaction to reglan- nervousness and jittery. Might want to suggest dilaudad. I unfortunately can only receive demerol where I live (several allergic reactions to most other pain meds) but I have had the dilaudad in Chicago and found it to work better than the demerol. Hope this helps and dont be worried about upsetting the doctors and nurses. I know first hand. they are in the service of you and not the other way around. hang in there Dennis
