Do you remember what color it was? Or maybe what color the eggs were?

Might have been a Killdeer:

Other birds that nest on the ground:

" Killdeer, meadowlarks, horned larks, and some species of sparrows are good

examples of birds that nest on the ground in open areas. "

Hugs,

Pam

Re: Junco - Jan>Pam

Pam,

Thank you for being right on top of finding pictures of this bird. I

should have known you would. When I was growing up in Upstate NY

there was bird who would make nest in our back yard right on the

ground. When she had laid her eggs the male and female would be very

protective and would run all over the yard trying to keep you away

from the nest. It worked for me, I wasn't getting near it which made

it bad when the yard had to be mowed. There were no trees or

vegetation around to protect their nests from sight which I thought

it odd they would build a nest like that. Does anyone know what kind

of bird that would have been?

Thanks,

Belinda

-Pam,

I read the link about the killdeer and the screeching noise it made

makes me think it might be this bird. I know it had long legs for a

bird its size. I had asked my mother recently if she remembered those

birds in the very back of our yard and she did. She didn't know the

name of them. I will ask her if she remembers what they looked like.

I might remember them so well because I was the one who had to push

the lawnmower back there. hehe. I know the complaints of a child. hehe

I just wish I could definitely remember what they looked like. I just

remember where they put their nest, the way they protected their

nest, the screeching sound and how terrified I was of them. One thing

for sure they did not have to worry about me bothering their nests!

hehe

God bless,

Belinda

If they had long legs and you were so scared of them... maybe it **was** an

ostrich! LOL
