Breath Holding

I would like to know if anyone has experienced problems with breath holding.

Recently, Terry has begun to hold her breath when concentrating intently on

an activity. For example, when using the walker, she frequently goes into

a mode of smaller and smaller steps and her whole body becomes visibly

tense. She seems to be concentrating on trying to walk and forgets to

breath; i.e. doing two things at once is a challenge. If I hold her hand

lightly until she relaxes, she can then step out much more briskly in a

longer, relaxed step and move much faster than with the walker. When she

holds her breadth, it is for long enough that when she does breath, she is

gasping for air.

Has anyone had experiences like this that can be related to MSA?

It sounds like Terry has reached that point where she can only do 1

thing at a time. It's part of the disease. That's why many have to

watch carefully while eating also. Signals are only able to tend to one

thing. As you said, the more she concentrates, the more she holds her

breath. She may also be experiencing a level of relay to the brain not

being automatic any more when it comes to breathing. The cerebellum and

brain stem are the control centers and those are the areas that are

affected.

Just my thoughts
