Guest guest
I have studied Atkins and Protein Power for a year. The book, Protein Power, will show you how to figure your exact protein needs to fit your particular body. I am 5'6 " , 50, and of medium frame and need 76 grams a day. What I do not know is after weight loss surgery, how much protein is actually malabsorbed by food. I have read over the last year many posts from people who have perfect labs without protein shakes and also from those who had bad labs without the protein shakes. I was trying to gather my own data to try to figure out if it was just the distals who lacked protein malabsorption but what I found out was there was no rhyme or reason to proximals, medials or distals in individual protein lab results with or without protein shakes. And I think this is due to the fact that everybody's diet is different....you would have to take a group of proximals, put them on a particular diet with a certain amount of food protein and no shakes, then six months later compare labs.....then do the same for medials and distals. There have been no studies like this done. I asked so many people who had the surgery two years and longer out and still received mixed reviews about protein supplements. There were people who did no protein shakes and were fine and those who had awful labs and had to do the shakes. So, after all the asking and research, I find out nothing more than what i started out asking. I ask my doctor and he said he has done over 1500 medials over the last 15 years and never recommended shakes and still claims we don't need them....but, who knows? I don't know how many patients he kept up with their labs and personal diets. There are no controlled studies about this that I have heard of. Since I don't have any proof one way or the other, I figured I would drink 2 shakes a day. That gives me 60 grams of protein from the shakes and I get lots of food protein, maybe 70 minimum a day. So I figure even if I were to malabsorb half of my protein, I would still be covered. I started back on Atkins to control my appetite, taking my vits and I guess all I can do is have my labs taken once a year on my own as my surgeon now says that they are not necessary until you feel symptomatic...so I have to figure on doing what is best for me based on ongoing labs because there just isn't enough wide based data to tell me differently. But, I really do enjoy the information Ray provides. I think we should all be able to express our knowledge and opinions because it helps us to learn. Thanks, Pat
Guest guest
My insurance paid soley based on my weight also. I am perfectly healthy other than weighing 300 pounds on a 5'5 " frame. It took me 2 weeks to get approved. I think it is sad how many people can get denied and have alot worse things than myself. There should be something that can be done---CIndy
