Hi everyone--- My surgery date for mand. advancement is in one week.

Besides being increasingly nervous, (what does " a while " mean????

Seems it will take " a while " to eat, talk, sing.....can we get more

specific?) I am concerned about how to prepare my 3 small kids for

what I'll look like. Any ideas on how to help my kids? How long

before I can expect to shuffle them around to school and activities?

Also, if you pray.......I'd love to have you pray for me on April

5th. Thanks!

Okay look under my folder and show them me at 2 days post op ;)

Kids are really compassionate they'll know your hurt and healing.

I would warn them though that you will accept forehead kisses, but

that they aren't allowed to touch your face until you tell them its

okay.

I don't know how small they are but small usually refers to under 8-

10. I am guessing.

I'd say 2 weeks before you'll be about 50% able to do what you could

before but perhaps a bit slower. Make sure they know this in

advance my daughter kept complaining...and try enforcing table

manners when' you're drooling...Honestly I'd say you'd be back to

doing everything at 1 month. Get as much help as you can.

Also make sure they know that you won't be talking much either. You

might want to write down for them a little story if they are really

small or a list of post op suggestions ;) I am saying a month as if

you have any under three then you will run into issues with

instructions...if you aren't well understood by yourself....

and kids are smart they'll figure you out quick ;)

And kissing you probably wont be able to kiss them how you would

have before surgery - your lips get a bit stretched and its sad as

they are numb too.

Good luck. 3 little ones...people thought one 2 month old was

heroic...nope rugrats is worse ;) my oldest is ten so she's what I

call a self cleaning oven ;)

Thanks so much for responding. I'm brand new to this site, so I'll have to try

and figure out how to get to " folders " . Hmmmm.....I had trouble when I tried to

click on photos before but I'll give it another shot. How long were your lips

numb? Did you have upper and lower surgery? I'm doing lower only and don't yet

know how many mm. Do you look different? My kids are 10, 8 and 4. My 10 year

old thinks I look fine and shouldn't be doing this at all. (She's a love.) The 4

year old freaked out when my husband shaved off his goatee because he " didn't

look like daddy anymore " so she's got me a bit worried. Thanks for your thoughts

and advice!

Hi, Bonnie:

I had upper/lower/genio done four weeks ago tomorrow. I think the

answers to your questions depend on what your doc has planned for you.

Do you know if you will be splinted or banded? I was splinted and

banded after my op. Nobody understood me for several days--I had to

write everything and use a bit of sign language. Then my hubby and

kids undstood me, although most outsiders couldn't. I was unbanded

after 3 weeks, and I could talk instantly. I still slur and can't do

the letter 's' but I am very easily understood.

I have two little ones (2 and 4) and I prepared them in advance. My 4

year old knew that I was having jaw surgery. A few days before my

operation, I told them that I was going to the hospital and grandmom

and pop would be taking care of them for a few nights. I told them

that when I came home I'd be swollen like a blowfish. We made swollen

faces and laughed. Tell them that your lips will be really swollen--I

forgot that part, and my kids were surprised. I also told them I

wouldn't be in pain. I told them that I wouldn't be able to talk for a

while, and I'd be tired for a while. I also made CDs of myself singing

bedtime songs and reading books (boy, that came in handy!). Now, I can

sing pretty well (although a little slurred--Amathing Grathe, how

thweet the thound--lol)

I am still on the liquid diet, but I bet with lower only, you might be

cleared to eat soft foods sooner. Check with your surgeon on that.

I feel decent after 2 weeks. I could drive around and run errands, but

I got tired doing it. Now, I'm pretty much back to normal. I was on my

feet all day (taking care of the kids), but I didn't get wiped out.

Good luck,

Eileen
