We live in the upstate of SC, was wondering if anyone in the group was from this area and would know of a neurologist that might be knowledgeable about MSA. We know of a Dr. Bergman in ton, but it is a good 3 hour drive from Clinton and would like to find one closer. Would appreciate any response. Winifred (I am new in the group and find good advise everyday)

I am on the waiting list to see Dr. Bergman in ton, SC. We live in

Charlotte NC and have seen 3 neuro's here, none of which are movement

disorder specialists, so they were unable to help. I also saw a MDS neuro

in Winston-Salem but was told that my MSA was out of his field of knowledge.

We are hoping that Dr. Bergman will be knowledgeable enough to help.

Clinton, S.C. appears to be only 80 miles south of where we live. We are

in the Lake Wylie area of N.C. Our bank and post office is in S.C....that

is how close we are to the border.

Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

Greetings Winifred,

You wondered about doctors closer to Clinton, SC. I would recommend talking with your GP about finding a movement disorder specialist in the Charlotte, NC area. as I understand it, Clinton is closer to Charlotte than other cities in the area. Then interview the movement specialists via mail or phone, to see if that doctor has experience with MSA (or Shy-Dragger).

Another avenue might be to talk with your insurance company (if you have a private company), for the names and numbers of neurologists that deal with movement disorders.

Just a couple of ideas.

,

Don't mean to burst your bubble of optimism but what you recommended would

be a great idea if there actually was a movement disorder specialist here in

Charlotte. Unfortunatly, with all the neurologists that we have in this

wonderful city, none are MDS's. They have one in Raleigh and one in

Winston-Salem (I saw the one in Winston-Salem who said that even he could

not help and he is a MDS) and that is it for the entire state of N.C.

Charlotte, N.C. had Dr. Bergman, who is a MDS neuro but he moved to

ton, S.C. about a year ago. I have seen 3 neuro's here in Charlotte

and being a MSA patient made me an " interesting " subject that they had never

before seen in their practice, only read about folks like us in textbooks.

Each one of them told me honestly that this disease was well beyond their

expertise and referred me elsewhere.

We are a 5 hour drive from ton, S.C. and I don't travel well but

Dr. Bergman is the doc that I have been referred to from the others here in

Charlotte that knew him when he was still in practice here. I too, wish

that someone closer was available who has experience with the various PD +

syndromes.

Hugs,

Deborah

Greetings Deborah,

You haven't burst my bubble. I live in the Research Triangle Area of

NC. With three universities and several first class hospitals in the

area, including UNC and Duke hospitals, we have a higher than normal

level of specialization in this area.

It is definitely worth the attempt. But I clearly do not know any of

the doctors in your area. As it is, I am under the care of a

neurologist, with whom I built a good rapport. Though he does not

specialize in movement disorders, at this point symptom management is

all I require. And it works.

So, I hope you are able to find a specialist, who can help you.

Thanks, , for your suggestions. I am a new subscriber to the support group (about 2 weeks) and in that short time I have different slant on the disease, completely. I was beginning to believe that my husband and I were an island unto ourselves, not knowing of anyone with MSA or even vaguely familiar with the word. "Birds of a feather, must stick together".
