Gestational diabetes and developing diabetes later

My sons are 21 and 24 so it's been a while since I was making regular

visits to an obstetrician myself, but during both pregnancies (different

doctors, different states) I was told that it was believed that there was a

link between developing gestational diabetes and increased chance of

developing diabetes later in life. At the time I didn't question the

" information " and have long since lost touch with both doctors but have

continued to hear this same idea expressed repeatedly over the last few

years - not every time someone has a large baby, but often enough that idea

has achieved at least old-wives-tale status in some communities (meaning

that we don't know if it's been accepted as a medical fact, but we believe

there's probably at least a grain of truth in there).

If I'm remembering correctly this idea was something that was included in

the talk about toxemia, not gaining too much weight during pregnancy, and

what passed for advice on nutritional needs of pregnant women.
