If you are going to have a plastic surgeon fix yours, you should make sure he's done a lot of them, and on WLS post-ops. Otherwise, a general surgeon would probably be better, as usually, they do more hernias than p/s's do. I asked my p/s how one avoids getting more hernias, and he said there's really no guarantee. My bypass surgeon had already told me that my hernias would require imbrication and mesh. The p/s will actually use something better than mesh, not goretex but something along that line (can't remember the name). I asked about that too bcuz I've read that it's easier to get infections with the mesh than with this other fabric. I think it may also be important to make sure that the surgeon doesn't just stitch the skin together but also sutures the superficial fascia first, as this makes the repair stronger. Ask the list for referrals to (names of) good surgeons in your area; probably there are people who could recommend one for you with lots of experience. Guest guest
Hi, I had open RNY 4 1/2 yrs. ago and have lost 130 lbs. I have had a hernia operation every year since, one ventral, at my original incision site, the other two above right (above gallbladder, which I had removed during 2nd hernia repair). I am now feeling another bulge in the same area of the previous 2 hernia surgeries. I can't go through this every year! I had my first two repairs done by my GB surgeon, and the last one I went to a major university hospital and had it done by the chief of gastro-intestinal surgery. I have now made an appointment with him for a look-see. Does anyone have any advice or has anyone gone through anything similar? Can they totally reinforce my stomach muscles? Should I also see a plastic surgeon? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Lou
