Guest guest
Hi Kris, I haven't read all the posts but sometimes I check in to the site to see what is going on. I am 22 weeks post op from upper & genio. You post struck me because you were complaining about your tummy. I too was soooo ill (diareah, nausea)about 3 or 4 days post op. As soon as I called my surgeon he had me immediately stop taking my antibiotics because he did not want me to get dehydrated. I was on Cleocin and it really did not agree with me at all. As soon as I stopped this medication, by the end of the day I was feeling soooo much better and was able to " eat " and not be sick to my stomach. I was worried about not being on antibiotics, afraid I would get an infection, but my surgeon said they pumped me full of them in the hospital and not to worry. What antibiotic are you on (sorry if I missed it in another post)? Perhaps your surgeon could switch you or maybe just have you stop taking it? Are you on any painkillers? Sometimes they can upset your stomach too. I hope you feel better soon. And just remember, soon this will all be a distant memory!
Guest guest
I'm taking Cephalexin. I have a lot of concerns about antibiotics and I discussed them thoroughly with my OS and my GP before surgery. My OS takes me seriously, but my GP has always played down how sick I get from them. The GP has finally ordered Nexium for me today, but my husband has to go get it, and then it has to have time to take affect... My OS says that mouth infections are nasty things and he does NOT want me to get an infection. He wants me to do everything I can to stay on antibiotics as long as possible. One night in hospital, and eight days for the first run of oral. He said maybe a second eight- day run. I will REFUSE that. When I see him tomorrow I'm going to fuss, and he's going to tell me to give the Nexium a chance to work, and that there's only two days left of the original run and I really need to finish it. If the Nexium does work, then I think I can hold out two days ... but if I get any more nauseated than I am now, I quit, and I don't care what he says. I am NOT throwing up tightly banded. I don't want to frantically jam scissors in there trying to cut my bands in time, as I'm retching. I have a gazillion bands all the way back on both sides, there's no way I can gracefully snip them all in time. So tomorrow I will be firm - either the Nexium helps, or I quit taking antibiotics. I don't care how much I cry in his office. If I don't have an active infection going, he can't make me keep this up. I think it's more important that I have enough of an appetite to eat nutritious foods that will naturally help me stave off infection. As for painkillers, he had me on one, but I've only been taking a half a dose right before bed to help me sleep (I'm not in facial pain) and last night I quit taking even that. I had a bad night - my first bad night since surgery. I'm trying to decide if I want to go back on the painkiller tonight to help me sleep, or if it's better that I not. Any opinions on that? Guest guest
Kris, I'm sure you've heard this before, but have you tried taking a tablespoon of plain unsweetened yogurt with your antibiotic? I know a lot people don't like the taste but it is extraordinarily beneficial to eliminate any problems the antibiotic may cause in the digestive tract, or you could get a lactobacili-acidophilus supplement from the health food store. I would try that before discontinuing th antibiotic. Marsha > > Hi Kris, > > > > I haven't read all the posts but sometimes I check in to the site > to > > see what is going on. Guest guest
There are also specific, prescription anti-nausea drugs. (Phenergan, I think, in suppository form, was the one my surgeon sent me home with. Fortunately I never needed it.) I can't imagine why either your surgeon or your general physician would be putting you through this, unless there's some problem we don't know about. Guest guest
I'm lactose intolerant. Yogurt makes me sick in the best of times. I tried acidophilus before for something else, and it made me sick, too. (No, I don't know why, it's not supposed to do that.) Tomorrow I talk to the surgeon and we'll see exactly how necessary all of this is. I did get my Nexium today. I feel less like throwing up than I did before. : ) Thanks for all the input.
