Dear Sharon, now you have me thinking...I thought cartliage was cartliage. My

doctor told me during a flare it doesn't necessarily mean just the ears. It

depends on where it wants to be. What part of the body. I just asked him this

the other day. So the ears don't have to flare while you are in a flare.

I was just going through what you are going through. Heaving, dry cough,

thats when I'd throw up, sore throat. Still have somewhat of the sore throat.

Probably will need to be scoped or cat scan.

I don't know about nasal chondritis...hopefully its one I'm missing. Love,

Sue

Sharon, I'm sorry I can't answer you questions on Bell's Palsey. Have never

had it.

I'm confused too as to what cartiledge RP can attack... I have had flares in

ears, nose and ribs...My nasal flares are burning sensation and really sore

nose. Glasses hurt to have them on. Tip of my nose is extremly red and then

the throbbing started.

Ribs are bad to when flaring, at least for me... Hurts to take a breath or

lie down.

I have numerous problems with my neck and spine and don't know if they are

connected. I am beginning to wonder if RP can attack the feet. Where is the

cartiledge in the feet anyway. LOL

I have alot of nasal secreations. Post nasal drip. Since I've been lowering

my pred, I notice it more. Real sticky and can't get it to move one way or

the other. I do get hoarse but ENT says that this is caused by acid reflux.

Good questions that you asked... This is how we learn... Thanks for bringing

them up.

hugs

Sue, I went round and round with my rheumy on this.... He told me if my ears

weren't flaring then nothing was... I think that is a bunch of you know what.

I have had my ribs flare when nothing else was or my nose and not my ears...

I know I am not an expert, but I don't agree with him at all. He also said

I have to have an elevated sed rate to be flaring and I know many in the

group have had normal sed rates while flaring. Sounds like you have a good

dr....

hi, i had surgery sept 22 nd and i'm only down 11 lbs - i get a smoothie

from smoothie king called the gladiator and it has 50 grams of protein so i

cover my whole day just with that and if i get extra in food -great - if not

i'm OK --- i'm having more trouble with the water - i hate water but i know

i need it -- i barely eat and this early on i don't get that full feeling -

i'm doing good with baked potatoes but this morning i tried a scrambled egg

and had the worst chest pain as it went down so i only ate half and i had a

yogurt and just water - i'll probably have cream soup or baked potatoe for

lunch and same for dinner.

I had RYN on the 24th of Sept. I lost 21lbs while in the first two

weeks and then when i started foods it slowed down. I am having

trouble getting all the foods down, I am just not hungry.. Is that

normal? Then i feel like i'm eating all day long to get 60-80gm of

protein.. How much protein is everyone on?

Hi Kris,

I havent had the wls yet but i did have my gallbladder out last

july and had it done lap, out patient so i was only in the hospital

for 23hrs(surgury 6am-released 4am) I have 3 small scares. 2 very

small scares on my right side (that is not noticable) and one on top

of my stomach that is about an inch long. You can still see that one

a little.I was up and about doing my normal things with in a couple

of days,not much pain.

You should not have a longer stay b/c of having your gall bladder

removed during wls...(I dont know, maybe someone else can answer that)

I hope I helped a little....

Good luck

Calcium Citrate CANNOT be taken with iron. If you do take iron then stagger

the Citrate an hour before or an hour after but not together. The iron will

cancel out the citrate.

I am taking threeXday Tums (Sugar Free) and two Kids Chewable

Vitamins. Those are the only things they told me to take.. Is there

something else i should be taking that would help with this process?

Me either. :) I have been overweight since adolesence..... I think

petite clothes come in odd numbers. Then you get to size 10,11 12 and then

I think the odd numbers. LOL

I have four small lap scars (three months post op) and they look like red

ink pen marks. I have a small scar across my belly button too, but it is

less noticable.

As for the gall bladder removal, I don't think it will get you extra time

off work if it is done lap as well. 6 weeks I think is the max, unless you

have complications. I don't think there is an extra scar for GB removal.

I didn't have mine removed, my DR said it was OK.

Hi everyone,

I have a few questions that I know you all will have the answers to.

1. Did you use Short Term Disability during your recovery? I do have

some paid sick time that I can use but I don't think I will have

enough to cover the whole time that I could be off. I could go a few

weeks with out pay but I don't want to go much more than that. This

month is my works insurance open enrollment, so if Short Term is the

way to go I need to sign up by April 30th. If you did use Short Term

what company did you go with?

2. Is anyone out there in Utah? If so could you recommend a good OS.

3. I do not have braces yet, my OD is thinking I will be ready the

end of this month. I have a retainer in right now, the kind that

expands/widens my upper jaw, sorry I don't know the exact name of

it. My question is when should I meet with a OS? Should I start

looking right away or should I wait?

4. Did you meet with more than one OS or did you just go with the

first one?

I really enjoy this site, it has provided me with so much

information. I can't wait till I am on the other side.

Thank you all very much, Aliesha

hi, aliesha! i'll try to answer some of your questions. there are a

lot of really knowledgeable people on this site that probably will be

more help as well. i'm not from utah though, so i can't help there.

1. i did not need to used short term disability. i had enough sick

days to take off about 7 days from work... that was all i needed.

but some people need more time off... it just depends. your OS can

advise you on how long he thinks you will need. i was home a total

of 9 days when you add in the weekend, though. my HR department told

me that if i had taken longer than 7 days, i would have been eligible

for short term disability. i am already set up with a plan at work

for that, just in case, and the company is UHC. it is just my

company's policy. you will probably need to talk to a human

resources person at your job about getting short term disability.

2. as far as meeting with an OS... my orthodontist referred me to my

surgeon. they often work together and i felt he was a very good

reference. he has over 25 years experience and i just felt really

comfortable with him after a couple of initial meetings. i did not

feel like i needed to get a second opinion, but that is always a good

thing to do if you have the time and resources. get references on

your doctors though... don't just open the phone book and pick

someone closest to you. make sure you are going to someone with a

good reputation.

if you have a good ortho and OS, they will be able to answer a lot of

your questions as well, but this site is also a really good resource

to get an inside view from people who have actually been through it.

good luck!

Aliesha,

I did use short term disability for my recovery. I took a month off

from work and went back half time for the first 2 weeks. (I just

started back to work this week!) I get short term disability through

my company. It's called Matrix Absence Management. I am not sure if

they offer it to individuals.

I met with my surgeon about 6-8 months after I got the braces on

(although my surgery was a year and a half after my initial visit

with the surgeon). My orthodontist has worked with him in the past

and I liked him instantly. I did not feel like I needed to get a

second opinion. I talked to a mother of a former patient of the

surgeon and felt very at ease with my decision.

Good luck and I'd be happy to answer any additional questions you may

have.
