Guest guest
....but this dumping thing, or whatever the heck it is, is starting to really peeve me in a serious way. Shortly after my last post, as I sat here sucking on my 3rd protein shake of the day (made as I always make 'em, with the addition of a bit of peanut butter), the cramping started up again. It seems to start up high under the breastbone, then gradually (excruciatingly gradually) move its way down. The only thing I can do is lie down on a heating pad with my knees drawn up. Oh, and moan slightly from time to time. The progression went like this: Tues. night, had about half a cup of raisins while making fruit cake. Dumped, with severe cramping. Felt okay by morning. Wed. -- drank shake for breakfast, had regular lunch, regular mid-afternoon snack. Ate two bites of chopped egg on half a bagel...started cramping again. Waited til it passed, had a protein shake to try to get some calories in. Was fine until I tried a bit of peanut butter on a spoon. Cramping started almost instantly. Went to bed. Not bad by morning, but not great. Thurs. -- shake for breakfast, decaf latte for snack, shake for lunch, shake + peanut butter for snack....kaboom! More cramping. At this point I have spoken with my GP, who has his knickers in a serious twist (he thinks I've lost too much weight, that my nutritional status is fragile, etc.), and who sent some prilosec home with my husband for me, on condition that if this keeps up I present myself at Emerg tomorrow morning. I've put in a call to my surgeon, hoping that he might have further insight into things. Meanwhile, here I sit, hungry but afraid to eat, with the cramping kind of rumbling away in the background. It's a barrel of laughs, I tell ya! Any insight or edification gratefully accepted. -- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> RNY September 19, 2001 Dr. Freeman, Ottawa General Hospital BMI then: 43.5 BMI now: 22.7 -150 lbs <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Guest guest
, I'm really feeling for you. I never thought of that kind of pain. If it's acid...trust me, the Prilosec will work. Another med I've was on for several years. I take Nexium now. It is even better. When I have run out...during my divorce I had no insurance and it costs like $100 a bottle, I simply could not eat. In 98 I went without for a week. Miserable, throwing up bile, pain exactly like you speak of. If this is the cause, it starts working in about 20 mins. Don't try to eat anything except light foods for about two days. Eat but not hard to digest foods. It seems for me, that it takes a couple of days to feeling normal after this kind yuk. Guest guest
, Just some suggestions....but bottom line....do what your surgeon says! Are you making your protein shakes with milk or water? Nothing wrong with a good protein shake, but maybe try with water and maybe some SF flavoring if you like it. No fruit, no milk, no PB. Raisins.....high in natural sugar. Egg salad...mayo maybe causing lactose intolerance (with milk if you use in the shakes too!) Bagel....carbs which quickly convert into sugar. Even though you are far out, give your insides a break. Go to a light diet. Maybe some chicken broth (no cream soups!) Think what you would give someone with an upset tummy. A soft boiled egg, herbal tea, cottage cheese, scrambled egg. Try bland foods. My instinct says if you are hungry your pouch wants to accept food, but it's just not caring for your choices ) Make some SF jello, have a cup of tea and take it easy! Guest guest
Hmm, interesting, Sue. I do make my shakes with nonfat milk, and this one seems to be going down okay, but I would not discount what you're saying at all. As for the raisins, yeah, I know -- in fact, when I did dump on them, I was almost glad as it kind of proved to me that my surgery was still " working " -- lately, I'd been eating more than I expected to be able to, though still far less than before surgery, and was having a bit of anxiety about that. I think I'll try your advice for the time being, at least till I can get some word from my surgeon about what the heck is going on! Yeesh, whoever thought it could get this complicated?! Thanks... -- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> RNY September 19, 2001 Dr. Freeman, Ottawa General Hospital BMI then: 43.5 BMI now: 22.7 -150 lbs <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Guest guest
Does anyone know of any reasons that we should avoid " soy milk " ....this is what I have always made my shakes with........I don't seem to have a problem with it....unless of course I go to fast!!
