Nature publishes groundbreaking papers on Stem Cells

Focus on Stem Cells - Nature brings you FREE online access. Dear colleague

Subscribe to Nature and get 18 months' access for the price of 12! On 20 June, Nature publishes two truly remarkable papers online which we bring to you, with associated News & Views and Nature Science Update articles, FREE as part of the unique stem cell focus. Click here to view them

Both these papers emphasise the potential of stem cells, which hold the promise of being able to replace diseased or ageing tissue. Genetically matched to the recipients, the replacement tissues would avoid the rejection problems that have plagued transplant medicine.

Stem cells can develop into any type of cell in laboratory cultures, so could be made to form any desired tissue, for example, heart muscle, to replace a diseased tissue. So far, most advances in this exciting new technology have come from embryonic stem cells, but use of these cells is ethically worrying and their use in research has caused much political controversy. One of the new papers describes a long-sought breakthrough — a new kind of adult stem cell that could transform the practice of medicine. In the other new paper, embryonic stem cells are used to generate neurons (nerve cells) in culture that when transplanted into rats with symptoms of Parkinson's disease, cause the animals to recover almost completely. A comprehensive focus at your fingertips… Nature's FREE stem cell focus also contains a selection of recent Nature publications on this hot topic, including scientific papers, News & Views articles, News Features and last November's highly influential stem cell Insight collection of reviews Subscribing to Nature gives you great, original science like this in all disciplines, every week.
