Guest guest
Has anyone else experienced this as an MSA related symptom? Terry has and it seems to be related to emotional stress. Her GP has come up with a med that has helped reduce it significantly, but not eliminate it. The med is a prescription item: Atrovent, a nasal spray. Thanks for your comments. Guest guest
Just wanted to let you know - this is a sporadic problem for my husband Bill. It comes and goes for no apparent reason. He also cries without much provocation, which is very unnerving for those who do not know his problem - like in the middle of a quiet church service or movie! Guest guest
, My mother Joyce (died 11/5/00 at 71) had the runny noise. She never ate without a tissue in her hand. Debbie -
Guest guest
, I don't know of the medication that you mentioned but I have chronic sinus problems, including runny nose, nose bleeds, and have a lot of mucus in my throat that chokes me quite frequently. My doctor has me on atarax, an antihistamine, for this. It helps but never seems to go away. I can't take antibiotics so that is not an option. I use saline nasal spray and Vaseline also. Guest guest
Deborah: You make an important point about the tie between runny nose and excess mucous. Let's extend it one step further to drooling. The latter is often a problem I believe though not in Terry's case. Perhaps this is an autonomic problem in controlling all secretions in the nasal/oral cavity. I know that Terry's brother, who had PSP, had serious problems with mucous and/or thickened saliva. I also learned recently from the folks in the Neurology Department at UVa that runny nose is a common symptom in many nuero degenerative diseases. We live and learn. Guest guest
When Ken used to drool or have a chronic runny nose, we were told it was part of the breakdown of the autonomic system. Most of us sniff in or swallow automatically, but MSA patients lose that. I do know that if I reminded ken to swallow or blow his nose that he did it. And if he remembered to do it, he did it. But most of us don't have to think about it, it is part of what we do automatically, and MSA lose most of those things. Barbara
Guest guest
et al, I too have a runny nose. It started at least a year or more ago. It isn't like sinus...that thick stuff.....this is thin and watery. At first used Claritn (medic thought it might be allergy which I'd never had). Helped a little but soon went off all. My nose runs and my eyes water every time I eat especially if anything is spicy or doesn't go down "right." I have just gotten used to it and put up with it. I can't stand taking a med. for everylittle nuisance and try to cope with this situation sans meds. Tissues go with me everywhere. To me, its just another breakdown of an autonomic function. barbara pond blacksburg va
Guest guest
, This may give you a little more information on Atrovent. It was originally indicated for asthma and other COPD diseases. Guest guest
, I have had a chronic runny nose but I do not know if it is related symptom. I had thought it might have something to do with this time of year. THe perscription that your GP perscribed for Terry sounds like it is doing a great job even if it didn't eliminate it totally. I will have to ask my internist next time I see her. Thanks, Belinda > Has anyone else experienced this as an MSA related symptom? > > Terry has and it seems to be related to emotional stress. Guest guest
Belinda: I should have kept track of how many responses there have been to this subject. Must be close to a dozen. This suggests that there is a correlation. Also, as mentioned earlier, the folks in the Neurology Dept at UVa tell me this is not an uncommon symptom. Guest guest
It is strange the things I just blow off to thinking it is nothing and then to see there is a reason for things happening to me. My nose will run and I can't sniff. That constipation is common. There has been other things in the past but can't remember what they were now. I am so glad that I can find these things out from the rest of you. Thank you!
