I just had surgery on tuesday and everything seemed to go fine. I am

now going crazy because i can't stand not opening my mouth. When do

they take the bands of the brackets after a advancement with rigid

fixation on just the lower jaw?

Thanks,

Brittany

Hi Brittany,

Please be patient. Although your surgeon fixed your jaw in place

with plates & screws, it's not entirely stable yet. That's why the

bands are there, to keep you relatively immobile until the bones

heal. It's really important that you follow your surgeon's orders,

especially in the early days and weeks of recovery.

The bone heals in about 6-8 weeks, just like any other break or

fracture (leg, arm).

After a week, I was allowed to take my rubber bands off to eat and

clean, but then they had to go back on again. That was hard, when

you can't open your lips or mouth enough to see inside, it's hard to

see the hooks to put them back on again.

Consider yourself fortunate, that your surgeon didn't wire your jaws

shut. That would be far more difficult to deal with, in my opinion!

Hang in there,
