Incision outside the mouth?

I just wanted to ask again, because I am starting to feel like maybe

my doctor is doing something different then the norm. I hope I am

being parnoid. Does anyone out here have an incision outside the

jawline on the lower jaw back by the ear? He said all incisions will

be made in the mouth EXCEPT this one. I didn't ask why, I was still

computing all the other details. I am having upper and lower done.

But this little tidbit is freaking me out. HELP!

H Lllies,

My surgeon told me that I will have a small incision on each side of

my jaw line that he will use to do some kind of measuring to assure

that everything is symetrical. Could that be what he was talking

about? When do you see him again? I'm sure if you call him to ask he

will answer quickly if you let him know how oncerned you are about

this?

I was told I'd have incisions on the jawline where the tools were

passed through for surgery. It ended up I didn't have any - I never

did ask why not. It may have been because originally I needed an

upper/lower, but after doing practice surgeries on my models, the OS

decided on upper only. The incisions were supposed to only be 3 mm

and heal with no scar. I've talked to other people who had them and

they said the cuts never bothered them.

Don't worry I have seen that. Your doc knows your specific case

and has chosen the best means to operate - relax.

Its a very very small pencil like incision from what I have seen and

heals pretty unnoticably as due to its size/shape tends to look more

like a pale freckle.

Thank you, you all are so helpful. I was a basket case, thinking it

was some weird thing! I kinda have to chuckle at myself, but I mean

coming into this there is so much to learn and become educated on. I

appreciate your response and comforting words. Thanks YOU

Everyone was so kind a responded to my question. For the most part

it seems to be the overall response that it is to pass the screws

through. This is what I recalled him saying, but my fear was that it

was this uncommon method. But that doesn't seem to be the case. He

said the scars would be tiny, and I wasn't so worried about the scars

but that is was some unorthodoxed proccedure, I think I am just

worring about all kinds of stuff at this point. I will ask him to be

sure, and let you know!

take care,

Lydia.....ps when is your surgery?

Ho-Kay...

Let's go a little more precisely into this...

What I was told:

My surgeon, and he was doing lower only on me, cuts inside the mouth

to reveal the bone. Then makes that vertical cut through the lower

jawbone, finds the big nerve, is careful to protect it as he teases

the lower jawbone apart. He gets things separated to the point that

he can slide the jawbone forward, for an advancement -- which is what

I had -- and then has to fix it in place.

In my case, he had to do some sideways sliding, too, which

meant " more carpentry work, " but let's ignore that.

Then he had to fix things so they'd stay where he put them.

So, to do that, he cut these tiny little incisions through my cheeks.

He put a trochar (a metal tube) through the incision, and then put

the drill through that, to screw the three tiny titanium screws into

place on each side. The trochar essentially protects your skin and

other tissues from the heat and abrasion of the drill, as he

explained it to me.

Having completed his mission, he pulled out the drill and the

trochar, and stitched up my face. The stitches were nothing, nothing

to take out and I was healed up within two weeks.

Folks, this isn't a biggie, unless something goes wrong, which it

usually does not. It's a tiny, tiny incision, really.

No problem, also too remember you want them doing what they are good

at how they think its best ;) When I was having gallbladder issues

(turned out to be clear) they talked about laproscopic surgery....

quite frankly I'll take a larger incision over a better turnout rate.

But you might want to ask him about the outside incision especially

if you have scaring issues or are of darker complexion. Because you

will want to make sure it heals as scar free as possible.

Well I smell pooey diaper walking around, got to run..

My ortho dropped off my molds to my OS this morning, so I am waiting

to see if he thinks we can proceed dispite one space left toward the

back on my lower teeth. I am hopeful.

good luck! We might end up being fairly close in our recovery.

talk with you later.

Actually, defy you to find where the incissions were made on the

outside! The only time you can see them is when I turn my head

sharply so my skin bunches up - it wrinkles a little differently

where the incissions were made, but if I have to go through all that

contortion to see them, obviously they're not very noticeable at all!

For Lydia, it sounds like your doc is planning to do a very standard

thing with your incissions. Pretty much every lower jaw surgery

patient has these type of incissions.
