Update on last night's problem

Well, today I'm on simple whey shakes only. I've discovered that if I

sip a bit of water while I'm drinking them (I know, this contravenes

the Non-Water with Meals Convention, and I will likely be hauled up

before an international court of law), they go down better and I don't

have as much cramping. I saw my GP this morning, and the first thing he

said to me was, " So -- are we thinking of having the surgery reversed,

then? " I nearly stroked out. " Are you *insane*? " I screamed. And I

meant it. No way in hell I'm coming this far, doing so well, only to

think about reversal because of this small setback. He looked taken

aback, and dropped *that* one right away quick, as well he might.

We did talk about the can't-eat-solids (or even thick liquids)

situation, though, and he feels that the cramping is probably part of a

dumping syndrome, though he doesn't know why I would be getting it now.

I don't actually have a gall bladder, so we know it's not that. We also

touched on the idea of a small bowel obstruction, but he felt this was

unlikely since I am (close your eyes, all ye who are easily offended)

farting okay. Not anything solid, but the farts are definitely making

it through. However, I have a call in to my surgeon (who is,

conveniently enough, doing surgery today -- some people have nerve,

don't they?), so my GP gave me a prescription for Motilium, and told me

not to take it till I'd talked to the surgeon.

So...looks like latkes (kosher or otherwise) are out for me tonight,

which is a pity; but I'm doing okay on my shakes so far. Will let you

know how it all turns out. But mainly, I wanted to thank everyone who

has responded for your great constructive and supportive input. It

really was a comfort to me last night when I was feeling very isolated

and, to be truthful, scared. This is such a great community!

A protein shake is not exactly a meal, and I know of no convention that says

we can't have water right before, during, or after a shake. If it helps, by

all means, DO it.
