If you want to know what life is like after RNY, go on some of the other

lists. I see posts there from people who have had RNY giving advice to new

RNY post-ops, things like " DO NOT swallow food until you have chewed it to a

pulp " . Anyway, after reading those posts, I can tell you, I'd rather take

vitamins to prevent malnutrition than have to chew my food to a pulp, plus

other guidelines they give each other.

It seems like we regularly get into a debate about which surgery is best and I

would contend, as I always do, that both surgeries are good and you should

decide which is best for your particular circumstances. I do want to add that a

distal RNY is much like the DS as far as malabsorbtion and lack of weight

regain. However, if you choose to go with either of these, you need to be very

diligent about taking supplements so that you don't have trouble down the road

with malnurishment. I had a distal RNY instead of the DS because my surgeon has

reversed this surgery 3 times successfully and I wanted that option should it

become medically necessary at some point. But I chose the distal procedure

because I wanted the most possible long term help with malabsorbtion. However,

many people on this list can attest to the fact that many people can have a

proximal or medial RNY and do just fine keeping the weight off. Good luck as

you continue your research.
