Jeanie:

Does your husband take Sinemet? If he does, tell him to check which

drugs he can take with Sinemet. I have a vague memory that Buspar might be on

the no-no list, but I am not sure.

Dear ,

My husband saw his neurologist yesterday and he mentioned putting my husband

on Bulspar (sp). I remember you mentioning another drug you were taking that

helped you with fatigue. Since my husband is also a physician he can

prescribe his own meds. if one doesn't seem to be working or talk with his

neurologist about it. Could you and anyone else on the list give me the

names of the drugs and dosage used for fatigue?

Jeanie

Fatigue - the worst part of this for me right now! My doctor has me

taking something called Provigil. I just started it this week and

I'm feeling a little more alert - I think - I take 200mg.

Is your husband still able to practice himself? (Can he go to work?)

I'm beginning to worry about how much longer I will be able to do

that myself.

Take care~

Dear Anne,

My husband was diagnosed Sept 2000 with OPCA. He has started to complain

about fatigue. He told his neurologist he will probably practice until

December of this year, but we are taking one day at a time. How about you?

What type work do you do and how long have you been diagnosed?

Dear Jeanie,

I haven't been officially " diagnosed " - I went to a neurologist about

three months ago for a sleep study and proceeded to fail all the

neurological tests. I had an MRI that suggested " degenerative

neurological disorder " and since then I've had blood tests, a CT scan,

I'm scheduled for a VER,BAER to rule out MS (which the doc

specifically told me I didn't have two visits ago) and I'm finally

going to have that sleep study.

I'm currently employed at a NY State university as a " research

analyst " which is a spiffy title for someone who tries to find

corporations, foundations, or people who would want to provide funds

for various university projects. I was a corporate research librarian

(and no, I don't mind being called a " librarian " ) in New York City for

17 years before my husband got a job in Buffalo and we moved here.

I'm having the fatigue trouble and I'm also having trouble

concentrating. Not good! And I'm not sure how much longer I can do

it.

Besides the fatigue - I've had 4 or 5 falls. I don't remember exactly

how many. I was embarrassed and seemed to think I had just

become clumbsy in my " old age " (I'm 46) Oh, well - no point in

bothering you with all my symptoms - but the neurologist heard that I

was suspecting MSA and tho to date he hasn't comfirmed it - I'm

pretty sure that's where this is leading.

I'm glad your husband can still work - and I hope he finds something

for his fatigue!

Take care - both of you!

Jeanie,

WARNING! It is ALWAYS best to start with very low doses and work up. MSA is

different for every patient and the medicines are best tried with

experimentation. In my case, my wife was given Comtan to help with the Sinemet

and it worked far too well, she got extreme dyskinesia. We ending up having to

cut the pills in fourths as there were no lower dosages. Comtan and Sinemet

only help less than half of MSA patients. In many cases of MSA that use

Sinemet, Contan does not help. Experiment to find the best combination of

drugs.

Best to look at the drugs you are currewntly using first as then someone taking

those drugs (because they help) can best tell you what they use. That is more

likely to help you than someone taking completely different drugs. In our case,

Sinemet helped with fatigue as well as movement. But that is NOT typical.

Take care, Bill Werre

Dear Barbara,

My husband is not on any prescription meds. He is taking Vit. E, and couple

antioxidents bought at health food store. Are these fatique drugs taken as

needed or each day? Thank you for your response.
