Guest guest
I am so glad that I was able to research, chat with other patients, research, research, and, did I mention, research to make the choice I made for my WLS. I think it is odd though that some choose one over the other for opposite reasons..lol. Many who chose the DS did so for the exact reasons I didn't choose it. After over 3 yrs post op, I am glad I chose the RNY just like those who had the DS are glad they chose that. I was..and still am...a food addict. I was also addicted to soda...regular soda. To drink 2 2-liter bottles of Pepsi a day was easy. Shoot, I could drink a 2-liter with DINNER!! lol So I wanted..no I PRAYED..for something that would stop me from ingesting a lot of sugar. I also wanted to limit the amount I ate. So, for ME the RNY was the right choice. Period. As I sit here eating my slice of meatloaf with gravy for dinner (which tastes wonderful, if I do say so myself..lol) I am glad that I am 3 years post op, have lost over 300 lbs, and am healthy. I can eat pretty much everything except high sugar items. What procedure you get depends on you and what kind of eater you are and what commitment you are willing to make. I also think age is a factor. Were I 18 I might have chosen a procedure that would let me be, well, more normal in food choices. But being older and married and all that, I chose the one best for me. And my husband will be having his RNY soon, too. I have met those on all sides of WLS... DS, RNY, VBG, whatever...who didn't get to goal or who gained a bit back. But they are off the meds, much healthier than they were before, and glad they did it. It is sad when anyone gets a tude that their procedure is the one everyone should have. That just isn't the case. We all need to research, and then choose what is best for each of us individually. May the lurkers here know that no choice is a magic pill that requires NO work on your part. All WLS procedures are tools, and if you don't take care of your tool it will rust. So take those supplements, get your protein in, drink your water, exercise, and you will be a success.
