my mess-up was a blessing

My 17 year old son has worn braces for a year, working with OD for

jaw surgery. He and I had seen the OS at the beginning of

treatment. I remembered him telling me he would work with the OD.

We had planned for the surgery for March of this year, so that my son

could play summer basketball. We went to visit the OS early January

and he said we had to remove the wisdom teeth first, then wait 6

months for the surgery. My son was devistated; he would have to miss

football of his senior year, as well as wear braces that much

longer. I begged the dr if there was anything else we could do. I

felt terrible for not checking with the OD that everything was

ready. The OD was mad at himself for missing this detail as well.

The OS was very arrogant, not willing to help out or make any

recommendations. He wanted to move the lower jaw back, and add cheek

implants.

I found 2 other OS in a nearby state. The first one said he would

take out the top wisdom teeth and just move the lower jaw back, and

the chin forward. Did not recommend cheek implants. Then we played

in a bb game against this dr's son and he changed his mind after

watching my son play bb and thought he should move the upper jaw

forward as well. The next day we went to the 3rd dr. He was so

confident and stated immediately that he would move the lower jaw

back, the chin forward with an implant, the upper jaw forward and

down, and remove all 4 wisdeom teeth. Also, he would plan the

surgery on my son's schedule, not his. He was unbelievably calm and

confident. Said removing the wisdom teeth with the surgery would

cause no problem.

My son had surgery on March 9, missed 3 days of school, then spent

spring break recovering, and went back to school. He is doing

great. The wisdom teeth caused no problem whatsoever. I am positive

that this was the best dr we could have ever used, but I would have

used the first dr had I not messed up and left his wisdom teeth in!

We have a 2 hour drive for our weekly visits, but that is nothing

when thinking about how our surgery could have been wrong.

He had some swelling, lots of bleeding the first night, and a sore

throat from the tube down his throat during surgery. He is still on

soft foods, and has lost 15 pounds, but is so pleased with the

results. Our OD said he has very little left to do because the

surgery was done so well.

You never know why things happen. I truly had to lie down in the

first dr's office because I was about to faint after " ruining " my

son's senior year of high school. I should have known this was the

wrong dr when his nurse just stepped over me to get around as I was

lying in my panic mode!

I'm so thankful for great doctors and this surgery. My son is a

happy kid!

Good Luck to everyone.

a,

Glad to hear that your son is doing so well. Sometimes things have a

way of working out for the best. Have you ever heard the song by

Garth " Unanswered Prayers " ? It fits for this situation.

Congrats!
