Guest guest
I can finally breathe ! Oxford Freedom approved 4 procedures for me with Dr Ren. Gallbladder removal, appendix removal, liver biopsy, and the BPD/DS ! I'll be joining you switchees on 8/23. Thanks to you all for 10 months of great information...without this list of fine people I would not be moving forward to a better life. Best to you all ! >>>>> Sharon M NY: Congrats to you! How wonderful to be approved! You're getting the full works, girlfriend! Why the liver biopsy, I'm just curious (i.e. nosy)? I didn't know Dr. Ren removed the appendix as well as the gallbladder but I think I remember someone else on the list saying they had theirs removed, too. Is this all done laparoscopically or opeN? I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that one couldn't do the appendix and the DS lap at the same time because it would require different positioning... I'm curious about it. All the best to you, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. GAgner/Mt. Sinai/NYC

Hope not...but its common to have fatty liver if you've been overweight...at least that was my understanding... >> I would think that a full liver panel would hint to this beforehand... but, perhaps the person has high lipds or something and the surgeon is taking a biopsy as a precaution? I thought that if someone had liver disease, they would be strongly discouraged from having WLS (perhaps only a distal procedure or WLS all together), at least until the disease is under control. I would think that if there is some suspicion about liver disease that the biopsy would be done beforehand and the surgery be performed based on the results? I know about fatty liver - been there, got that! LOL Good news is it can reverse itself in most cases (depending on how severe it is and how long one has had it). It is almost always reversed with weight loss. I mean, I guess I can understand why someone would want to know about one's liver condition before surgery but I thought a liver panel would reveal most abnormalities? I'm not saying there's anything wrong with a biopsy (while you're there, why not - especially with an open surgery) but I thought that such things could be discerned without this invasive procedure per se... It just makes me wonder if there isn't any study being done in conjunction or something about BPD/DS and the liver, etc. all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. GAgner/Mt. I believe that Dr. Rabkin also routinely does a live biopsy as well. My LapDS surgery included the parietal gastrectomy, distal bypass, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, and liver biopsy. Guest guest
Actually, liver biopsy is routine. I had one with my DS, and I also had one when I had the VGB in 1994. Its very quick and simple when they're already there. Doing it when the person isnt open or under is much more complicated and uncomfortable. Meli > > > > >I can finally breathe ! Is it to check for cancer? > Thanks, Sheryl Some of the changes in the liver tissue caused by steatohepatitis can, in rare cases, lead to eventual cirrhosis after many years - just as some other types of hepatitis can do. It's not a condition that has received a lot of attention over the years, but more interest in it has arisen lately. A liver biopsy documents the stage of tissue damage, if any, that has occurred at the time of the biopsy. - SC
Guest guest
, Dr. Ren did my DS, removed my gallbladder and appendix, and repaired a massive hiatal hernia, all lap (7/13). Guest guest
Hi -- I was just as suprised when I heard appendix and liver biopsy. She is doing it lap and we never discussed the above. I am getting answers to this today. I won't be able to post them until I get home sunday but perhaps if someone calls, my mom could let you know. It may just be a way to bill things for ins. or maybe a study is being done on the liver. I do have " fatty liver " (elevated enzymes) but nothing extreme. This blood panel was done by my PCP months ago. See ya on the other side ! Sharon M in NY --- ruisha@... wrote: > > Sharon M NY: Congrats to you! How wonderful to be > approved!
