Guest guest
My surgeon states that I have to remove three wisdom teeth before they can even think of doing my procedure(advance my lower jaw about 12mm)and then I would have to wait another 4 to 6 months to have the surgery done. Has anyone else had to go through this? I'm tentatively scheduled for the end of September.
Guest guest
We went through the same thing in January, except my son was scheduled for the surgery in March, according to the orthodontist. However, the Surgeon said " NO " . Wanted to remove the teeth, then surgery 6 months later. This messed up my son's football for his senior year, plus he was ready for the surgery. I did lots of research and found the next two doctors we met with willing to do the surgery and remove the wisdom teeth at the same time. I asked what was the worst thing that could happen and he said the jaw could split, and all he would do is immobilize the jaw for several days, but he has never had that happen. Our surgeon did the surgery on March 9, and like he said, it caused no problems. Said it never has. He would prefer to take them out ahead of time, but he was willing to work on my son's schedule. My son had lower jaw moved back, chin forward, upper jaw down and forward, plus 4 wisdom teeth removed, 2 being impacted. Everything went beautifully and the wisdom teeth caused no problems. Tomorrow will be 5 weeks since the surgery. We were under a time crunch, so I was so relieved to hear other drs willing to remove them at the same time. I would never put my son at risk for a messed up surgery, but felt very confident in these doctors. Actually, I believe the better dr was the one we used, not the original one we were scheduled with. Good Luck! > My surgeon states that I have to remove three wisdom teeth before > they can even think of doing my procedure(advance my lower jaw about > 12mm)and then I would have to wait another 4 to 6 months to have the > surgery done. > Has anyone else had to go through this? Guest guest
There are two schools on this - it is all about lower jaw: one says presence of wisdom teeth - especially impacted! - will cause a " bad split " , namely your jaw will break incorrectly causing al kinds of problems- hence they refuse to do the surgery with them in. Another school says presence of wisdom teeth does not increase chances of bad split. You deside whom to believe. I do not know why upper wisdoms can be an issue. Guest guest
The first surgeon I met insisted that my w.t. be removed as well. Only he said so at the exact moment I was ready for surgery, which would have set me back 4 to 6 months. Would he have mentionned this at the time I didn't even had braces, I would have had them removed, as per his instructions. However, since then, I switched surgeon. The second surgeon I met sad she could remove them during the surgery, but I will have to be wired shut longer *possibly*. She didn't see this procedure as being an issue. I emphasize on the word possibly because she won't be able to tell until I'm actually under. The worst case scenario, that she suspect might happen, is 6 to 8 weeks wired. But she told me she did that before and no patients were more than 4 weeks wired shut. Between two surgeries and waiting up to 6 more months, I'll take the risk of being wired shut for 8 weeks (at worst), than having to wait up to possibly 6 more months before the final surgery. Guest guest
My OS and ortho had a different reason for not doing them at the same time. The ortho wanted them out before braces so he could get my teeth in the best position, and the lower teeth wouldn't move where he wanted them to if the wisdoms were in the way. My OS said that the wisdom teeth had to come out first because once, and only once, did he ever do it at the same time as the jaw surgery. His patient was miserable, miserable, miserable, and he said he'd never do that again. Actually, I'm very glad that I had my wisdoms out before braces. Until that point I had never had any surgery, never been knocked out, never even had stitches. I was terrified of this whole idea of cutting bone and jaw and stuff. My OS took out my wisdom teeth (including one that was impacted) under general, and it was a breeze. No swelling, no pain. I slept for a day and then went back to normal life. It was a great burden off my mind, and I had the chance to learn to trust my OS before I had to let him at my entire face. Guest guest
We talked to 4 different surgeons. Since we were in a time crunch, 3 said they would remove them during the surgery and one said he wouldn't. I know they prefer to do it ahead of time, but we didn't have time if our son wanted to play football his senior year of high school. They were removed with surgery on March 9 and we had no problems whatsoever. We were very thankful and appreciative. > > > My surgeon states that I have to remove three wisdom teeth > before > > > they can even think of doing my procedure(advance my lower jaw > > about > > > 12mm)and then I would have to wait another 4 to 6 months to have > > the > > > surgery done. > > > Has anyone else had to go through this?
