RE: Tums vs. citrate

I *finally* managed to convince my 65 year old father and my 62 year old

stepmother, who has osteopenia according to a recent DEXA, that they need to

spend a few extra bucks to take calcium citrate with vitamin D, magnesium, and

boron, and that they both need to take 2000 mg (elementally measured) EVERY day,

no more than 500 mg at a time. They literally were buying Tums because it was a

bit cheaper. My Dad's no dummy (retired after 29 years as a highly technical

IBMer), and I bombarded him with the NIH info and the complete list of

peer-reviewed studies that I also used to convince my bariatric surgeon of the

virtues of citrate for RNY folks, and that tipped the balance for him.

As I reminded my Dad, a broken hip or two is a lot more expensive and painful

than a couple of bucks a month extra for calcium citrate. It's hardly like

they're broke, and I'd hate to see Glenda's situation worsen. I am somewhat

outraged that her doctor put her on Fosamax but didn't insist on calcium

citrate, given that she's had stomach problems and has documented low stomach

acid. ARGH.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get calcium citrate into an almost three

year old who's not into dairy products (thank goodness)? She doesn't like the

Twinlab chewables (too tart), and though she was game to trying to swallow the

Citracal tablets and the Vitalady capsules, they were both too big for her to

manage. I've been building her up to Citracal Liquitabs with some Splenda added,

but even with Splenda the taste is a bit of an acquired one. The AllOne calcium

citrate powder has no taste (good) but tends to settle out of a drink pretty

fast (bad). Does anyone know how much elemental calcium a kid her age needs? I

really wish she was still breastfeeding... then this would be a non-issue!

Meaning to say that had I had CITRATE, I might not be in the condition I am

today. Ditto for my husband.
