Guest guest
Gayle, I don't know how exercise affects the hazard of regain...since I am not at goal yet. But I did join the gym about 2 months ago as I felt I was really slowing down as I get nearer goal and wanted to build muscle. And I have felt a tremendous benefit in a very short time frame. I finally budged off my plateau and even though I have only lost about 10 pounds, I have gone down 2 sizes and am seeing actual muscle definition which is incredible for me. My program consists of MWF I do 15 minutes of cardio on the treadmill to get my blood circulating to the muscles and then I do about 1 to 1/2 hours of weight training on both machines and free weights. Then on T and Th I take a Pilates class that lasts 1 hour. It is incredible...a combination of core strengthening of abdomen and back muscles and stretching and strengthening legs and arms. When I started these classes, I had so little strength in my abdomen that I couldn't even get to a sitting position from flat on the back without grabbing my thighs to pull myself up. Now I do it easily though the leg lifts while doing abdomen curls are still a challenge. I definitely see strength, flexibility and tightening. I am pretty sure I will still need a TT some day, but its good to build strong muscles now so when I am ready to do that, I will recover much faster. There is something powerful that happens for me when I combine healthy eating, strength training and weight loss (maintenance) together. I finally feel in control of my body. And that is very empowering. I think this is a great topic and hope others will share their programs and what works or doesn't for them. BTW, I hit my one year anniversary from my revision on 11/29/02 and made it to minus 147 pounds with about another 50 to go.
