Last year when I was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, I saw a neuro

opthomologist about my eyes. I have extreme sensitivity to light. He told me

that my pupils don't react as they should(an autonomic function.) They stay

dialated most of the time. It is like the dialation they do for eye exams.

Needless to say because of this, I not only can't see in the light but my eyes

don't focus well on things. I do wear dark glasses almost all the time. I have

always been an avid reader and now I can't read at all any more. My son, Jim

reads things to me. He read me Harry Potter last winter. The doctor told me the

sun without the dark glasses could eventually ruin my retinas. However, if I

continue to wear the glasses and a wide hat my eys will stay this way but I will

not go totally blind. That is what I was worried about.

Another thing I wanted to comment on was the runny nose. Does anyone have a

stuffed nose all the time. Especially in the morning or heavy mucus in the back

of the throat. Sometimes it is hard to swallow the mucus. It takes me several

hours to completely clear this out. I have never had allergies before. At first

I thought that these symptoms were allergies but maybe not. My father has late

stage parkinson's and his nose runs constantly. It is at the point where he

doesn't have enough muscle to blow his nose any more. Meg

Hi Meg,

Anne got the same problem with her eyes. She also wears dark glasses. She is

doubting she will going to wear the sjogrenglasses. Those glasses are also

covered on the sides. Her eyeproblem was one of the reasons why she was

Dx-ed with PAF instead of MSA.

Reading she is still able too. Focusing is causing troubles, exspecially

when we are out for new glasses. LOL

Greetings!

You mentioned problems with reading. Boy do I understand. Consider

using Books on Tape or CD. It is a good alternative.

And yes, I also have the heavy mucus in the morning. Keep hydrated. 64

fluid ounces per day. It still occurs for me, but tends to not be as

thick.

Regards,

Bob has trouble "tracking." In other words, moving his eyes from left to right, up to down, so can't read much at all. His eyes (and thus, his head) seem to stay focused on one thing and it is so hard for him to turn his head in the direction he's going because it is so difficult to turn his eyes. We haven't had a complete eye exam for a little while now, but at the last one his vision was actually good - it's just the neurological thing. One exercise is to give him a flashlight and have him follow the light that I shine with the flashlight in my hand. He can do this - we really need to spend more time on this type of exercise.
