Guest guest
Okay kids!!! Indulge me please! I called a friend of mine to inform her that I am scheduled to have my upper/lower jaw surgery on June 2nd. She asked if I was going to " try " to gain weight before the surgery. Try!!! I live in New Orleans already! Who has to try! It's keeping the weight off that's the battle . . . LOL! But I digress. If memory serves me correctly, I believe I read a post that stated that gaining weight prior to having surgery is not advisable. What is the general consensus? Should one try to increase one's weight prior to surgery or not? I'm 6'2 " and teeter between 160lbs to 165lbs. Wouldn't it make more sense to take in plenty of nourishment after surgery as an incentive not to lose weight? Any fielders on this one??? Have a great weekend everyone!!! Guest guest
There's no need to gain weight prior to the surgery. I personally think gaining weight in anticipation of loosing it, is rather like planning to go on a yo-yo diet, which is a bad thing. If you want to help yourself in advance of the surgery, then get some exercise. Try to get both aerobic and anaerobic exercise - run, cycle, lift weights, etc. Starting from a high baseline of fitness prior to surgery is probably one of the biggest factors under your own control. Under your surgeon's supervision you can probably ease back into the exercise a few weeks post-op. If it works for you as it did for me, the combination of pre- and post-op exercise will greatly aid your recovery. And it's not a bad way to live longer and improve your quality of life in general, either. At 6'2 " and 165lbs, I suspect you're already in pretty good shape, so keep up the good work if you are! --Neil > Okay kids!!! > Indulge me please! Guest guest
I'd think you want to have good nutrition before and after surgery, but I'm no expert on any of this. I'd have welcomed losing a few pounds, but did not try to do so, as my surgeon had told me I'd need every calorie I could take in to support the healing. I lost about 10 lbs during my stay in the hospital, but it came right back once I got home. (Sigh.) (Hey, I'm not gonna keep you away from those Beignets, nor the Crabmeat La Louisienne. Nor even Bananas .) Cammie > Okay kids!!! > Indulge me please! I called a friend of mine to inform her that I am > scheduled to have my upper/lower jaw surgery on June 2nd. Guest guest
In general, what is the average weight loss after this surgery? I have heard about someone losing 30 pounds - I can't afford to lose so much. > I'd think you want to have good nutrition before and after surgery, > but I'm no expert on any of this. > > I'd have welcomed losing a few pounds, but did not try to do so, as > my surgeon had told me I'd need every calorie I could take in to > support the healing. > > I lost about 10 lbs during my stay in the hospital, but it came right > back once I got home.
