Guest guest
I was wondering if anyone out there could offer us some insight..... My daughter, 14, is thinking about having this procedure. Our first consultation will be May 6, and I would like for her to be as prepeared as possible. I am not exactly sure of all the terminology but, she has a underdeveloped upper jaw (one side)beleived to cause her slight crossbite and a very moderate underbite. She thinks they will only have to do something to her upper (again, this is all without having had a concultation)and she doesn't think they will have to wire her only band. She had an expander for 1 year and has had braces for 3 years. Her ortho says he can't do anything else. We let her make the decsion, and she has decided that she wants to have the procedure, but I beleive she is not aware of all involved and she also wants it done at a special time in the summer and before school starts again (understandable) almost like she can rush this to make it work in " her " schedule. Anything offered will be better than what I've got now. Thanks, Concerned Mom (Pam)
Guest guest
Hi Pam. I too have a crossbite and I'm having upper and lower jaw surgery 3 weeks today to correct that, and I have a little bit of a gummy smile, so that will be corrected as well. This type of surgery is pretty major. I'm not sure what kind of info you are looking for, but I'll tell you a bit about my surgery, and I'll try to help you with any questions you may have. I was told my surgery will take 6 hours, I will be on a liquid diet for 6 weeks and will loose %10 of my weight, and will be banded (hopefully not wired!). I'm expecting to only spend 1 night in the hospital. From what I've heard this procedure is less painful than having your wisdom teeth extracted. Has she had her wisdom teeth out? I had mine removed 3 years ago, and I wasn't in hardly any pain, so hopefully it won't be very painful. I've been in braces for a year now, and ready to get this surgery behind me! Hope this helps and if I can help you in any way let me know! hawaiidreamer06-Ronda > I was wondering if anyone out there could offer us some insight..... > My daughter, 14, is thinking about having this procedure. Guest guest
Pam, I had a very similar problem, and had upper jaw advancement in november. (I was 17)I was wired shut for about two weeks, and was told that most patients with upper jaw are just banded or else wired for a short time. The only problem I encountered was scheduling the surgery, because my doctor kept finding little issues with my braces that had to be fixed pre-op. I was told I was a candidate for the surgery about 6 years ago, and planned on having it about a year earlier than I actually did. In other words, don't get too set on having it done at a certain time, it can be very frustrating and disappointing. I did it over thanksgiving break and only missed about three days of school.Obviously every case is different, but if you have any questions id be happy to help. good luck!
