Guest guest
Hello, and welcome here. There are several people who post in the group occasionally who are from the UK, and I think maybe even some in London, although I'm not sure about that. I can't address your health care delivery system, although I think some folks have done it that way, and others have gone with private doctors. It's not a speedy process, so if you can manage to get signed up when you start, that may get rid of the waits -- but that's really putting the cart before the horse. (most people need orthodontics for at least 18 months -- some longer -- before the surgery can be performed, and then for a while after, as well.) First, who can help? A good gp should be able to give you some direction, at least to an oral surgeon or an orthodontist. Or your general dentist should be able to see what's going on and suggest some help. Those failing, if you can do, find an orthodontist you trust, and tell him/her what's troubling you. Or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. It really isn't all in your mind, either. The cosmetic effects are certainly a consideration for many people, but there are also real and structural issues which can cause pain, bone loss, tooth damage and loss and inability to eat properly. The cost varies greatly from place to place, and depends on what you need to have done, as well. One jaw? Two jaws? I can tell you that my 20 months of braces cost about $5,600, and that my surgery on lower alone was between $15,000 and $18,000. (US dollars) Good wishes to you. Guest guest
Here's the good news: For most people, there actually isn't much pain, and what there is is manageable by the medications. That's not universally true, of course, but usually the pain is minimal -- especially compared to what you think it will be!
