Guest guest
Boy, just when I thought I was becoming so smart on these new things......today, for the FIRST time, I did give Bob liquid while he was lying down - I won't do it again. They did in the hospital with his upper body elevated - I assume I could do that if necessary. We usually do the liquid when he's sitting in a chair. I did not know that fluid could go into the lungs with a tube! It thought that was our one safe means of liquid intake!!! I do know enough to check for residual so that he won't choke because of too much in the stomach, thus vomiting. This does worry me, though - what if the plunger part isn't working properly and it shows no residual? Thanks so much for writing. Guest guest
I fed Ralph Jevity with fiber in his PEG. It came in eight ounce cans and dr recommended two cans for him at a meal and then a glass of water or seven up to clear the tube. My grand kids became quite good at feeding their grand dad. Just be sure your patient is not laying down when feeding. The upper body needs to be elevated or it will go into the lungs. Go slow. No rush. Ralph could not stand a swift feeding. Of course he was a big man. So he took more food. Later when he had the Garshon nasal tube he had the Jevity bottle on a stand and it dripped into the tube and then into the stomach. Do not put anything solid in there!!!!!!!! Barb -- " I've learned, that it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular. " Anon.
