Guest guest
I suffer from spasms and cramp in one of my legs with increasing frequency. It tends to keep me awake or interrupt my sleep. I have tried the herb Valerian (2250 mg), which works quite well. Does anyone know if Valerian is safe for occasional use for people with SCA/ataxia or MSA? Guest guest
Fred, Here are some references that I found on the subject of Valerian root. http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/5000/5416.html The following link had this to say: " It was once prescribed for sleep disorders, but has been permanently banned from American markets due to an incidence of contamination with fatal results. " http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/botanical_retired/8122 And this was said: " Products made from species other than Valeriana officinalis can be rich in a compound, didrovaltrate, which has been shown in laboratory testing to be toxic to cells. " http://www.consumerlab.com/results/valerian.asp I hope this answers your question. Hugs, Deborah I suffer from spasms and cramp in one of my legs with increasing frequency. Guest guest
Fred, I could not find a recommended dosage of this herb, I did find these warnings * May produce sensations of "strangeness" in some individuals. These persons should not use valerian. * In extremely high doses, valerian may cause paralysis and weakening of the heartbeat. Do not exceed the recommended dose. At this website: http://www.personalhealthzone.com/valerian.html Note that heartbeat problems are often associated with MSA, have you talked over it's use with your doctor or pharmacist? Take care, Bill Werre =================================== Fred Seeker wrote: I suffer from spasms and cramp in one of my legs with increasing frequency.
