Guest guest
hi, all. i'm getting my wires taken off today! its been a LOOOOONNNNNGGGGG six weeks. i have no idea what to expect. i'm about to punch everyone in the face. the next time someone asks me if i'm going to go eat a hamburger i will dropkick them because there is NO way on God's green earth i'll be able to eat a hamburger today or any day in the next couple of weeks. i know it will take time to get back to normal. i've been on a hunger strike since yesterday because i'm so sick of liquid foods... so i apologize for my violent attitude. lol! was anyone here wired for the full six weeks like me? if so, what was it like getting them off? what did you eat first? i have only have a few hours to find this all out for myself, but i'm so anxious and wanna know what to expect. any input would rock... thanks, heather
Guest guest
Hello , Good Luck today. I was wired shut 6 weeks in 1991 then 4 weeks in July. So I've " been there, done that " !!!! I do know how you are feeling. As for getting the wires cut---you might take a Tylenol or something before your appt. Not that it " hurts " , but you will find yourself kind of clenching afterwards, and it sure gave me a headache. Be prepared, it will feel very odd afterwards. I'm sure that the doc will put bands on afterwards, but I felt like my lower jaw was going to fall off after the wires were cut. Food wise--I ate mashed potatoes, yogurt, applesauce. It was all better then liquid only. I was not allowed any actual " chewing " for another 3 weeks after the wires were off. You will do fine. Keep us posted. a > hi, all. i'm getting my wires taken off today! its been a > LOOOOONNNNNGGGGG six weeks. i have no idea what to expect. i'm > about to punch everyone in the face. the next time someone asks me > if i'm going to go eat a hamburger i will dropkick them because there > is NO way on God's green earth i'll be able to eat a hamburger today > or any day in the next couple of weeks. i know it will take time to > get back to normal. i've been on a hunger strike since yesterday > because i'm so sick of liquid foods... so i apologize for my violent > attitude. lol! > > was anyone here wired for the full six weeks like me? if so, what > was it like getting them off? what did you eat first? i have only > have a few hours to find this all out for myself, but i'm so anxious > and wanna know what to expect. > > any input would rock... > > thanks, > heather
Guest guest
thanks for the input! i will definitely take some motrin or something before my appt. (or right after). i'm sure it'll feel really weird. my OS told me that i'll be able to eat soft foods, like pasta and soft bread right away. i hope he's right... so far he's been right on the money about everything else. if i don't get some real food in my tummy, i'm going to cry. i'm such a baby. pain, i can handle, lack of sustenance is another story. lol!!! i'll post an update once i'm free. it probably won't be till tomorrow though cuz i won't be coming back to the office after my appointment and i don't have internet at home. > > hi, all. i'm getting my wires taken off today! its been a > > LOOOOONNNNNGGGGG six weeks. i have no idea what to expect. i'm > > about to punch everyone in the face. the next time someone asks me > > if i'm going to go eat a hamburger i will dropkick them because > there > > is NO way on God's green earth i'll be able to eat a hamburger > today > > or any day in the next couple of weeks. i know it will take time > to > > get back to normal. i've been on a hunger strike since yesterday > > because i'm so sick of liquid foods... so i apologize for my > violent > > attitude. lol! > > > > was anyone here wired for the full six weeks like me? if so, what > > was it like getting them off? what did you eat first? i have only > > have a few hours to find this all out for myself, but i'm so > anxious > > and wanna know what to expect. > > > > any input would rock... > > > > thanks, > > heather
Guest guest
Hi heather, I was tightly banded for 4 weeks...when I had the bands off I could only open like a quarter inch. Still I managed to get a cheeseburger (mickey d's, tiny pieces) in there. I was disappointed it didn't taste as good as I expected. I'm a couple months post op now and can eat anything... still don't have the opening yet, but its getting there!! Have fun with your new mouth! - PS you probably have your wires off now, but the surprising thing I found is that I could not open my mouth...totally weird feeling. It actually hurt to open more than a quarter inch. If I did it by accident (i.e. when brushing)...yow! It hurt. I'm about 1 1/2 finger's widths now. Guest guest
thanks, john. the concept of delayed gratification escapes me at the moment. i know in a few months, this whole ordeal will have been worth it but for now i want, need MUST HAVE food. i could go for a cheesebuger right about now. but i know what you mean about it not tasting as good as you expected. if you can't take a big huge bite out of it, its just not as satisfying. still, its good to hear that you can eat what you want now. i have to remind myself that i'll be there soon too. i have about 2 more hours to wait... > Hi heather, I was tightly banded for 4 weeks...when I had > the bands off I could only open like a quarter inch. Guest guest
hey heather- Congrats on getting the wires out...I have 3 more weeks to go, AHHH! For those of us not as fortunate, can u share some good liquid diet ideas. I've only been wired for 1 week and I'm beginning to get tired of yogurt smoothies, soups, milkshakes, ensure, etc. I keep thinking that pasta or something would taste good blended up, but haven't done it yet. HELP! Thanks, > > Hi heather, I was tightly banded for 4 weeks...when I had > > the bands off I could only open like a quarter inch. Guest guest
michael, when i hit my three week mark, i started getting desperate for anything besides than smoothies, milkshakes and ensure. if you add one cup of water to just about anything, it will blend. you might add more or less water depending on what it is. here are some weird concoctions i made: 1. liquid burrito. go out to taco bell, get a bean burrito. take it home, cut into four pieces (tortilla and everything), add a cup of hot water and blend until liquefied. yummy. add your favorite hot sauce or sour cream if you so desire. 2. easter dinner: mom's mashed potatoes, a few small pieces of turkey and sugar snap peas. again, blend with a cup of hot water and you're good to go. lol! 3. breakfast: bacon, eggs and potatoes blended into, you guessed it, a cup of hot water. my first week being wired, the thought of blending the above foods was very unappetizing for me. however, once i actually did it, it was surprisingly satisfying and yummy. good luck! i'd like to tell you that this time flies by, but for me it has seemed to drag on. just keep your chin up and take care of yourself and you will get through it. heather ps: 40 more minutes until my appointment! yay!!! > > > Hi heather, I was tightly banded for 4 weeks...when I had > > > the bands off I could only open like a quarter inch. Guest guest
Instead of using water you can also use chicken or beef broth, you can also blend canned soups Re: me cranky, need food. michael, when i hit my three week mark, i started getting desperate for anything besides than smoothies, milkshakes and ensure. if you add one cup of water to just about anything, it will blend. you might add more or less water depending on what it is. here are some weird concoctions i made: 1. liquid burrito. go out to taco bell, get a bean burrito. take it home, cut into four pieces (tortilla and everything), add a cup of hot water and blend until liquefied. yummy. add your favorite hot sauce or sour cream if you so desire. 2. easter dinner: mom's mashed potatoes, a few small pieces of turkey and sugar snap peas. again, blend with a cup of hot water and you're good to go. lol! 3. breakfast: bacon, eggs and potatoes blended into, you guessed it, a cup of hot water. my first week being wired, the thought of blending the above foods was very unappetizing for me. however, once i actually did it, it was surprisingly satisfying and yummy. good luck! i'd like to tell you that this time flies by, but for me it has seemed to drag on. just keep your chin up and take care of yourself and you will get through it. heather ps: 40 more minutes until my appointment! yay!!! > > > Hi heather, I was tightly banded for 4 weeks...when I had the > > > bands off I could only open like a quarter inch. Guest guest
, Good luck with the wire snipping! As for recipes, I have this grand idea that I'm going to skip right past Ensure and Smoothies in June and go straight to anything and everything blended up smooth. Some ideas I have are to soft boil, poach, or fry a few eggs. Then into the blender... I love lots of sauce on my pasta, so why not do a 50/50 mixture of pasta and sauce? Cream of chicken soup, cheese, boiled chicken, and tortilla will make a great blended chicken enchilada, and then add green chile to season. Guest guest
Hello! I have been wired for six weeks, and will be set free this Weds. YEAH! My wires are so tight that even milks shakes need to be thinned! However, I have a space at the back of my mouth due to extraction's and the hospital gave me what looks like a turkey baster that I can load up with pureed food and shoot into my mouth. It's not a pretty sight to watch but it works! If any of you can work with something like this (a regular turkey baster will work) try it! I have made ham salad, egg salad, and even pureed scrambled eggs and sausage! It can be a real inconvenience and I usually ended up sticking with cup of soup, baby foods (the desserts are great) and mashed potatoes with lots of gravy to thin them out! Good luck to everyone hope this will help someone! Linnette
Guest guest
I swear, people have said that they blended everything from Mexican food to pizza. (Can't imagine that last, myself, but hey -- it's a good time to be experimenta.) One of the most popular, over the long haul, was to get refried beans and whiz them with broth to make them thin enough. Another (although some folks turned up their noses at it) was a combo of 's Tomato Soup and 's Cream of Corn soup. Fiddly's husband is a chef of great excellence and innovation, and he made what turned out to be her favorite meal -- whizzed up Corned beef and cabbage with lots of broth. There are also some recipes, I think, on the geocities site. Happy blending! For me (although I wasn't wired) I blended some of 's Sirloin Burger chunky soup (used a stick blender and a pyrex measuring cup, and thinned it down so that it needed no chewing). Tasted pretty good to me. And a friend made me a glorious fluffy shrimp mousse -- but I suspect you'd better wait for that one until you lose the wires. It was almost, but not quite, liquid. Guest guest
The chicken enchiladas sounds great, but how about some good old mexican stews or soups, I made pork and hominy (pozole) yesterday and thought how easy it would be to throw it in the blender if the hominy was cooked until soft enough! I'll definetly try that! Marsha > > > > > Hi heather, I was tightly banded for 4 weeks...when I had > > > > > the bands off I could only open like a quarter inch. Guest guest
My bride and I went out for appetizers and dessert last night. We had this AMAZING crab dip and toast point appetizer. I'm thinking I could live on that stuff alone... Just stick the toast into my mouth and suck it till it's mush!!! Guest guest
Try blended she crab soup, when you reach that point. As long as you're not wired, the toast point theory should work fine, I'd think... yummm. Cammie > My bride and I went out for appetizers and dessert last night.
