Tummy Tucks and Plastic Surgery

After reading some of the posts about tummy tucks I think I might need to

add a disclaimer to mine. Because I had Congestive Heart Failure the

previous year, my surgeon did not want to send me home. I was actually

checked into the hospital for a few days. I was on morphine the day of

surgery and two days after. No wonder there was no pain. I had really

good happy, no pain medicine. After that, I was on liquid loritab for a

couple of days generally at night.

I had essentially no pain with my open nry. Not being especially brave, I

asked the surgon why. He said fat cutting does not hurt. What hurts most is

muscle cutting. Since I had very little stomach muscle, I was spared the

pain. When highly muscular men have any kind of surgery, their pain is so

much worse. Therefore, I would assume a plain old panni would have less pain

than a Tummy Tuck. Just my 2 cents. Fay Bayuk

If you had your " tummy tuck " at the same time as your SRVG, then it

was probably a panniculectomy which does not involve muscles and is

DIFFERENT than a a 'true' tummy tuck which involves the tightening

and rejoining of the muscles. I say this from personal experience

that muscle work is more beneficial and painful than just the removal

of skin and excess fat. From what I read, your pain, pain

medication, and hospital stay was for your WLS vs the removal of your

pannus ... Based onb experience of both the WLS was much more painful

and longer laser lasting than the plastic surgery that followed 3

years later.

Fay,

In my experience, you are exactly right. I had less pain with my

Open RNY than with my muscle tightening TT & hernia repair. I was

ready to go back to work in 4 weeks after my RNY, but had a difficult

time going back at 5 weeks with my TT just last Aug! That was with

200 lbs less fat to have to lug around as well! I can't imagine what

the pain might have been if I still weighed 364 lbs!

And to Ceep:

I can really tell a difference since my TT in my back pain. They

only took 3 lbs, but the difference is like night & day! I can walk

for miles without my lower back hurting.

Actually I had the surgeries at two different times. The SRVG was in

July 2001 and the other was in April 2002. The surgeon did remove the

pannus but also did stitch up some of the muscles. I had already lost

about 150 lbs. The surgeon wants me to loose atleast another 100 lbs to

complete. That is one of the reasons I decided to send a disclaimer. I

realize that mine was not nearly as extensive as some. However, I am not

following your logic on the pain medication. So why the pain medication

the the surgery in April?

I'm lost? I am confused as to what surgeries you had when . . .but

basicly, my experience has been that the more invasive the surgery, the

more painful it is. Just skin stuff is usually not too painful. That

said, working with muscles is usually more painful than just skin stuff .

.. . and of course we are all individuals and other factors will

contribute to the perception and actual pain experience.
