Guest guest
Hi, Sue UK here Saw my ortho today for first time since the op two weeks ago. He took X rays and seemed really pleased with the result. I had a good look at them to see the hardward that was put in - I lost count of the screws! I can't close my mouth properly so queried this - he says it is the splint in the way plus I'm biting on my gums - so hopefully in a couple of weeks when it is out that will be much better. I feel a bit achey now as I seem to have done a lot of talking today - first to the ortho and then my husband and I took some time out to visit Westerham in Kent where Winston Churchill used to live. We were going to visit his house but it was shut. Anyway trawled all the shops in this pretty village chatting to the shopkeepers and I and also dared to eat out - just a bowl of soup which they kindly liquidised a bit more for me and gave me a mug to drink from. Has anyone here had a palatal split done at the same time as their upper jaw surgery? - no expansion appliances - just the palate cut and moved apart to expand it. My palate is pretty tender which makes swallowing a little uncomfortable unless my tongue hits just the right spot! The congestion seems to be slowly dying out although there still seems to be blood slowly oozing down the back of my throat. I'm assuming this is whatever is making the congestion making its exit! I hope so. Pain is on the whole less but worse very early in the morning after the evening tablets have worn off and a couple of hours before I am due any more so that is probably the hardest part of the day. I am however, trying to wean myself off them slowly. I don't need them so much in the daytime. Someone here wrote about heightened sense of smell after the op. How true that was - my husband had eaten garlic and my bedroom just reeked - noone else seemed to notice. It lasted 3/4 days along with a lessened sense of taste. Also, I definitely have a heightened sensitivity to salt - I fancied a chocolate fix the other days so had a wee spoonful of Nutella - the salt almost overrode the sweetness - how odd! That'll do for now. Best wishes Sue
Guest guest
Sue, you sound good -- and I envy you that trip! Congratulations. One idea, for the pain tablets: Ask your surgeon if maybe you could break them in half, for times when you don't need a heavy dose, and keep taking them full strength at the other times. My docs frequently suggest this. DON'T do it, though, without checking with his office first. I don't wanna get you in pain you'll have trouble getting out of. Keep on with the good healing!
